Funeral services for Susan Evelyn Messer, age 80, were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2001, in the Hedley Church of Christ with Bright Newhouse, minister, officiating. Burial was held in Rowe Cemetery in Hedley under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc., of Clarendon.
Mrs. Messer died Sunday February 25, 2001, in Amarillo. She was born November 15, 1920, in Olustee, Oklahoma, and came from Oklahoma to Hedley in 1953. She married Doyle Messer on March 19. 1953, at Hollis, Oklahoma. She attended school and graduated from high school in Harmony, Oklahoma. She received her Associate of Arts degree from Altus Jr. College (now Eastern Oklahoma University), her Bachelor of Arts from Panhandle State College in Goodwell, Oklahoma, and her Master of Arts degree from West Texas State University in Canyon. She was a schoolteacher for 43 years, teaching nine of those years in Oklahoma and the remaining 34 years in Quail and Hedley High School before her retirement. She was a member of the Hedley Lioness Club and the Gamma Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, having held all of the elected offices within the organizations over the years. She was a member of the Hedley Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, Doyle Messer of Hedley; one daughter, Angela Hines and husband Mike of Round Rock, Texas; two sons, Lyndon Messer of Hedley and Stuart Messer and wife, Kaye, of Memphis; her mother-in-law, Lille Messer of Clarendon; and five grandchildren, Ashton, Aaron, and Meagan Hines of Round Rock and Kim and Peter Messer of Memphis.
Casket bearers were Max Hudson, Ashton Hines, Aaron Hines, Bob White, Anthony Knowles, and Leon Freeman. Honorary bearers were Connie DeBoard, Harold White, Jim Taylor, Jesse Freeman, Rodney Hargrove, Bill Carson, and Blackie Johnson.
