Hugh G. Phelps of Terrell passed away in a Terrell hospital Sunday, December 23, 2001.
The son of the late Clarence Charles Phelps and Eva Effie Williams Phelps, he was born May 10, 1915, in Donley County, near Clarendon where he was engaged in farming. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps. Prior to moving to Terrell 15 years ago, Mr. Phelps lived in Los Angeles, California, and retired from the City of Los Angeles in 1978 after 20 years as a welder. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Terrell.
Mr. Phelps was married to Vernelle Leathers of Lubbock on November 26, 1942, and is survived by his wife, Vernelle Phelps of Terrell; three sisters, Frances Lloyd of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Dorothy Breedlove of Clarendon; and Mildred Hayes of Panama City, Florida; his sister-in-law, Virginia Wardlaw of Terrell; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Haskell Phelps.
Funeral services were under the direction of Goggans Funeral Home of Terrell and were held at the graveside in Highland Memorial Gardens at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2001, with Rev. Ernie McCoulskey, officiating.
