Funereal services for Florence Ardelle Briggs, age 98, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2002, in the First Baptist Church in Lefors with Rev. Lewis Ellis, pastor, officiating. Burial was held at Memorial Heights Cemetery in Lefors under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa.
Miss Briggs died Saturday, February 2, 2002, in Amarillo. She was born February 17, 1903, in Comanche County, Texas. She graduated from Ferris High School and received her bachelor’s degree from North Texas Women’s College in 1924. She later received her master’s degree from North Texas State University in Denton and received a library science degree in Colorado. She also was awarded an honorary doctorate degree. She was a teacher in Texas for 38 years of which the last 20 years were served in Lefors. She finished her teaching career in Liberal, Kansas, where she taught for two years. Miss Briggs was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lefors and was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She had lived the last four years at the Medical Center Nursing Home in Clarendon.
She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include one sister, Ann Briggs Cowan of Jarrell, Texas; several nieces and nephews including Jaquetta Owens of Clarendon; grand nieces and nephews; and great grand nieces and nephews.
