Funeral services for Glenn Chester Butler, age 88, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2003, in the First Baptist Church in Claude with Dr. Charles Davenport of Tulia, officiating. Burial was held in the Claude Cemetery under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc., of Clarendon.
Mr. Butler died Tuesday, January 21, 2003, in Claude. He was born Mary 25, 1914, in Weatherford, Texas, and had been a Claude resident much of his life. He was a farmer and rancher prior to his retirement. He married Allie Mae Cope on July 4, 1936. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and a member of the church choir. He was an honorary member of the FFA, had been a 4-H leader, and served as a Soil Conservation service Director for 25 years. He also was a Past President and former Director of the Farm Bureau, and he was instrumental in helping get Mid Plains Telephone for rural residents.
He was preceded in death by his wife on April 20, 2002, and by a granddaughter, Shana Delin Butler, on January 31, 1974.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Chester and Shirley Butler of Claude; two grandchildren, Kyle Butler of Amarillo and Shelly Allen and husband Pat of Canyon; and two great grandchildren, Tiffany Allen and Tyler Allen, both of Canyon.
Casket bearers were David Butler, Wendell Sanders, Nat McElroy, J.W. Butler, Doug Cope, and Gerald Wood.
The family requests that memorials be to the First Baptist Church in Claude or the Claude Volunteer Fire Department.
