Clarendon High School swept the competition away last week when 13 members of the CHS academic team advanced to the regional UIL meet.
Clarendon won the competition at Amarillo College by beating out 11 others schools in District 2-1A.
Taylor Shelton led CHS in the competition walking away with three first place medals and one for second place and by himself had more points than both the Memphis High School and the Shamrock High School Academic teams.
Shelton placed first in Current Issues and Events, News Writing, and Headline Writing and second place in Editorial Writing, qualifying for regional competition in all four events.
Lacey Anderberg won two medals in the competition placing first in Editorial writing and second in Persuasive Speaking.
Valerie Taylor was first in Literary Criticism, and Matt Aaron was fifth, leading the Literary Criticism team to a first place victory. Taylor also placed fifth in Ready Writing. Other members of the team include Shanna Shelton and Stephanie Fowler.
Carmen Hamilton took first place in Spelling and led the spelling team to a first place finish. The spelling team consisted of Hamilton, Tim Sears, Joaenea Horn, and Andrea Findley.
Vanna Holton finished with a first place win in Lincoln Douglas Debate.
Eric Pitts captured a first place medal in Ready Writing, and Ashlee Kidd carried home a second place medal in Feature Writing.
Other participants in the UIL competition included Sarah Depew, who placed fifth in Feature Writing and fourth in News Writing; Tim Leeper sixth in science, Jessie Anderberg who placed sixth in Poetry; Sarah Ray who took fourth in Prose; Kensy Morrow who placed fifth in Editorials; Robert Shelton fifth in Persuasive Speaking; Branson Carter, third in Social Studies; Jamie Simmons, fourth in Social Studies; and James Williams, seventh in Social Studies.
Those participants qualifying for regional competition will travel to South Plains College April 10-11.
