W. George Bourland

Graveside services for W. George Bourland will be held on Sunday, June 22, at 9:00 a.m. in Citizens Cemetery. 

Mr. Bourland passed away on May 23, 2003, in Hemet, California, after losing a battle with cancer.  He was born in Clarendon, Texas on May 24, 1915, and graduated from Clarendon High School in 1932.  He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant.  He served as a supply officer in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, during World War II and resigned from the Navy after the war with the rank of Commander.

Mr. Bourland opened a small private supply business in the states from 1946-1947.  He went to Guam in 1947 and remained there until 1983 when he returned to the states.  During his stay in Guam, Mr. Bourland owned and operated many diverse businesses, including food production, men’s apparel, appliances, insurance and real estate.  He retired from United of Omaha insurance company in 1983 after serving 24 years as their general agent for Guam and the Far East.  Mr. Bourland also wrote a book about direct democracy entitled “Who Gets the Antelope Liver.”

Mr. Bourland was also very much involved with community affairs in Guam.  He was a member of the Guam Chamber of Commerce, the Guam Board of Education, Rotary International, the Shriner’s Club, and the Masons.  He was also a past president of Guam’s Association of Life Underwriters, co-founder of the Arc Light Chapter of the Air Force Association, a member of the Guam Navy League, and the USO Board of Directors.

Mr. Bourland was preceded in death by his daughter, Sally Rupprecht, and his second wife, Betty Lewis Bourland.

He leaves behind his daughter, Brooke Young of Woodland, CA; his son, Joe Bourland of Temecula, CA; his stepson, Wid Slick of New Mexico; his stepdaughters, Anne Shelton of Clarendon and Susan Lecanas of Dallas; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
