Fifteen CHS students competed in the West Texas UIL Academic Invitational on January 17.
Students who placed include Carmen Hamilton, sixth in Spelling; Shanna Shelton, fifth in Literary Criticism; Stephanie Fowler, second in News writing; Jamie Simmons, eighth in Social Studies; Joaenea Horn, fourth in Ready Writing, and Tim Sears, sixth in Ready Writing.
This meet was the first practice for these academic competitors. They will travel to Canadian on February 14 for another invitational.
Donley County’s new agriculture agent has settled in and is encouraging local residents to call on his office to take advantage of the services of the Texas Cooperative Extension.
Leonard Haynes started work January 1 in the Cooperative Extension’s new office, which is located on Kearney Street behind the Post Office next to Panhandle Community Services.
The new agent says he stands ready to help local producers with their crop questions, and he also is urging people to call his office if they have any lawn or garden questions.
Haynes has already been busy working with the Donley County Junior Livestock Show and Auction last month and says he hopes to build more interest in the 4-H and youth development programs.
“I want to build that program back to where it should be,” Haynes said. “I’d like to see about 100 kids in there, whether its in livestock projects or consumer science programs.”
Haynes transferred from Liberty County, where he served three years as the 4-H and youth development agent. He served a year as assistant agent before being promoted into the 4-H position.
Haynes earned the New Agents Award presented by his peers in the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association in 2002.
He was a member of the team recognized with the TCAAA Excellence in 4-H Club Support earlier this year.
“Leonard will be a great asset to our district, where he will be leading educational programming with clientele throughout the county,” said Donna Brauchi, regional program administrator in the Panhandle.
In Liberty County, Haynes conducted innovative education programs involving 4-H, developing new materials and resources for youth and volunteer training emphasis. His service included contributions in youth education and skills development efforts and in the activities involving club management, judging contests, and newsletters for members and managers.
In addition to getting ready for stock shows in San Antonio and Houston, Haynes is busy making plans for two events in March – the Texas Community Future Forum and the Northwest Texas Ag Conference, the latter of which will offer seven CEUs for pesticide applicators licenses.
The agent holds a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science education from Texas A&M University. Haynes is a member of the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association and Texas Association of Extension 4-H Agents.
Haynes is a native of Johnson City. He is married to Ronda, a Spearman native and registered nurse.
Donley County still has a vacancy in its family consumer agent’s position, which Haynes said the Extension hopes to fill soon.
The local Extension office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed for lunch. Sue Howard serves the office part time, and Haynes is asking folks to just leave a message if no one is there.
Donley County landowners and operators will have an opportunity to gather information and set priorities for future U.S. Department of Agriculture conservation programs at a meeting next Thursday.
The Program Development Group will meet February 5, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. in the Clarendon College Courson RFO Center.
“Local landowners or anyone can be involved and are invited to attend the meeting,” Weldon Sears said. “We want to gear these practices towards local concerns. This opportunity is significant in terms of local control so it will fit to our land owners and our local resource needs.”
The primary function of this meeting will be to develop recommendations about resource concerns as they pertain to the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), which is a conservation cost-share program administered by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).
Program development will be established at the local level, and therefore local involvement and input are essential to making the program relevant.
“The more people who participate, the more this will help our local community,” Sears said. “This is a chance for people to have not only an input, but also to make sure this program will work for them.”
This group will determine conservation concerns and priorities for cost-share assistance for Donley County, select eligible conservation practices to address the selected concerns and prioritize them, and make recommendations for cost-share rates and incentive payments. The group will also establish strategies for public outreach efforts, set a screening and ranking process, and determine program performance.
The Courson Center is located on the campus of Clarendon College, south of the Bairfield Activity Center.

The Clarendon Enterprise set a new record and bested all other entries in the Texas Press Association’s Mid-Winter Special Section Contest during the 57th TPA Mid-Winter Conference & Trade Show last Friday in Houston.
The 125th Anniversary Edition of the Enterprise, an issue that was three years in the making, took first place in its category and received Best of Show honors, which put it above all other entries, including those from several large daily newspapers.
“This was a big win for us because even though we were one of the smallest papers entered in the contest, we came out ahead of papers many times our size,” said Editor Roger Estlack.
“It was a lot of hard work to put that issue together. We felt good about our chances at the contest, but the results exceeded our expectations.”
A total of 96 papers entered the contest, and the Enterprise was among ten newspapers that competed in the small weekly division of the contest.
Judges from the University of Texas, Texas Christian University, and the Austin Advertising Federation selected three top finalists in each division; and then registered convention attendees cast votes for the winner of each division and the overall Best of Show.
According to TPA officials, 153 votes were cast at the convention, and the Enterprise received 111 votes or 73 percent, to win its category, thus setting a new record for the contest.
In the Best of Show tally, the Enterprise received 24 votes, and its closest competitor received 16.
Among the winners of other categories were The Freer Press, The (Aledo) Community News, The Cameron Herald, The Graham Leader, the Polk County Enterprise, the Denton Record-Chronicle, and the Stephenville Empire-Tribune. Contest entries also included those from Amarillo, Odessa, Conroe, Brownwood, and many others.
Representing The Clarendon Enterprise at the convention and accepting the award were Editor Roger Estlack and Web Master Ashlee Kidd.
The 125th Anniversary Edition was published June 5, 2003, and chronicled the history of the Texas Panhandle’s first newspaper from its establishment on June 1, 1878, as The Clarendon News by Rev. Lewis H. Carhart and its role in recording the history of the community and all of Donley County.
A limited number of the anniversary editions are still available for sale, and portions of the edition have been uploaded to the Enterprise’s Web site at www.ClarendonOnline.com/history.
Services for Billie Ruth Ashcraft, age 75, of Clarendon were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at the Church of Christ in Memphis with Don Stone, officiating. Burial was held in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis.
Mrs. Ashcraft died Tuesday, January 20, 2004, in Memphis. She was born July 19, 1938, in Tampico, Texas, to the late Mr. James Jouett and Mrs. Viola Sullivan Jouett. She attended school in Estelline. She was a life long resident of Hall County. She then moved to Clarendon in 1991 from Memphis. She married Lee Eugene Jackson on January 16, 1945, in Memphis. He preceded her in death on July 9, 1990. She then married James Ashcraft on April 27, 1991, in Clarendon. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
She was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Survivors include her husband, James Ashcraft, of Clarendon; two sons, Terry and wife Valorie Ashcraft and Teddy Ashcraft, both of Clarendon; one daughter, Billie Jean Murdock and husband Sonny of Memphis; one brother, James Jouett of Hobbs, New Mexico; four grandchildren: Alen Murdock of Memphis, Shane Ashcraft and Kasi Anderson – both of Amarillo, and Aaron Ashcraft of Kansas City, Missouri.

Memorial services for Billy Wayne “Bill” Lindsey, age 58, were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Wellington with Bill Baker, minister of the First Christian Church, officiating.
Mr. Lindsey died Tuesday, January 20, 2004, in Dallas. He was born on June 9, 1945, to Frank Bailey Lindsey and Pauline Wingeart Lindsey in Wellington. He graduated from Quail High School with the Class of 1963. Bill married Nancy Thomas on June 1, 1968, in Wellington. He worked as a welder, farmer, rancher, and also in law enforcement. He was a former deputy of Hall, Childress, and Collingsworth Counties. Bill had also worked as the chief of police. Bill was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as Deacon. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Past Master of the Wellington Masonic Lodge 763.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Lindsey and Frank Lindsey, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Lindsey of Wellington; three daughters, DeJon O’Rear and Diana Green, both of Wellington, and Danielle Morgan of Amarillo; one brother, Jimmy Don Lindsey of Memphis; one sister, Mary Ann Simpson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and nine grandchildren.
Honorary bearers were John Carson, Tommy Powell, Pete Whitaker, Cliff Hartman, Dan Langford, Carroll Nunnelley, Doug Seal, Larry Winkler, Jim Bryant, Rich Fry, Tony Jensen, Kenneth Foster, Steve Hartman, and Don Donaldson.

Graveside services for Glenda Patterson, age 70, were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2004, at the Panhandle Cemetery in Panhandle with Rev. Robert E. Field officiating. Arrangements were by Schooler Funeral Home in Amarillo.
Mrs. Patterson died Thursday, January 22, 2004, in Amarillo. She was born in Eastland, Texas, in 1933. She married Richard “Pat” Patterson in Borger on August 17, 1951. She worked as a secretary in the oil and gas industry until her retirement in 1985. She and her husband then moved to Clarendon, where they raised cattle for 15 years before moving to Amarillo in 2000. They had been members of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Clarendon. They had been married for 51 years when Mr. Patterson died on January 5, 2003.
Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Seymour and Joy Howard, both of Fritch; one son, Richard Patterson, Jr., of Sugarland; seven grandchildren; Michael Armstrong, Christopher Armstrong, Melissa Howard, Kristi Howard, Robyn Patterson, Jonathan Patterson, and Hannah Patterson; and one great grandchild, Bryna Armstrong.
Graveside services for Eulan Daniel “Dan” Seal, age 77, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2004, in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon with Rev. Rob Seale, Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church and son of Mr. Seal, officiating. Arrangements were by Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc., of Clarendon.
Mr. Seal was born July 13, 1926, in Petersburg, Texas, and had been a resident of Amarillo for the past five years. He worked as a carpenter most of his life prior to his retirement.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Melba Cline; and by three brothers; John Seal, Jim Seal, and Al Seal.
Survivors include one son, Rob Seale of Clarendon; one brother, Ted Seal of Happy; five sisters, Ruby Patton and Arlene Newman, both of Amarillo; Marie Carnes of Grants Pass, Oregon; Jo Trip of Spring Branch, Texas; and Ruth Baker of Houma, Louisiana
As a result of the 2002 Farm Bill the Donley County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) in Clarendon has been given the charge to lead the way in developing programs and initiatives to improve soil and water resources at the local level.
“The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) authorizes a locally driven process, coordinated by conservation districts, to guide and set local priority resource concerns and program direction. It provides tremendous opportunities for local people to become involved in assessing local resource needs,” said Dick Bode, chairman of the SWCD.
EQIP is the USDA cost-share program to assist farmers and ranchers address their resource-based concerns and problems.
According to Bode, the process deals with developing a list of concerns for the long and short range EQIP planning and development.
To enact the EQIP on the local level, the Donley SWCD, in partnership with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will conduct a program development group meeting with its conservation partners and interested persons or organizations on February 5, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. in the Clarendon College Courson RFO Center, RFO classroom.

The purpose of the meeting is to conduct a local conservation needs assessment and make program recommendations on what problems the SWCD in conjunction with the Local Work Group should address in future years. Local recommendations will then flow to the Local Work Group where the district’s technical issues, resource priority area, and program policies will be reviewed and integrated into the state, regional, and national programs.
“We are really excited about the opportunities the new EQIP offers because Congress is seeking our leadership to assist our community in carrying out a conservation program that wisely invests public resources to protect local natural resources,” Bode said.
Hedley High School sent teams to the West Texas High Invitational Academic Meet in Stinnett and gave a great showing with four of the six teams winning second place.
Stephen Howard was second overall in Number Sense, and the team of Howard, Lacey Wallendorff, and Travis Hrbacek came in fifth out of twelve schools.
The Calculator Applications team of Treva Rowland, Brittney Bennett, and Ruth Anne Howard performed very well placing second. Rowland was the overall second place individual, and Bennett was the overall third place individual.
The Current Events team was paced by Ben Shaw’s seventh place showing and Kyra Stevens’ eighth place showing.
The Science and Math teams also came in second with Lacey Wallendorff and Stephen Howard placing third and fifth respectively in each contest. Howard and Wallendorff were also the top two chemistry students in the science contest.
The showing was commendable considering Hedley was one of only three 1A schools in the contest which included much larger schools like Caprock, Pampa, Dumas, Dalhart, Perryton, Spearman, Canadian, and West Texas High.
The math and science teams will be competing this weekend at the Coronado Invitational in Lubbock.
