Memorial services for Annell “Nelly” Owens Stokes, age 67, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2005, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel in Pampa, with Rev. Charles Lowry, pastor of the Cross Point Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa.
Mrs. Stokes died Monday, September 19, 2005, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born June 9, 1938, in Clarendon. She married Alvin Ray “Stokey” Stokes, I, on December 4, 1955. She had been a resident of Pampa for 41 years. She was a mother and homemaker, rearing four children until entering the work force in 1973. From 1973 until 1993, she enjoyed her career as a cashier with Gibson Discount, Ideals Groceries, and Franks Groceries, where she met her wonderful lifelong friends. In 1993, she started a second career in the medical field with Pampa Regional Medical Center, retiring in 2003.
She was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Ray Stokes, II; three brothers, Jack Owens, James Owens, and Don Owens; one sister, Glenda McAlister; and parents, Ida Velma and Charlie Byron Owens.
Survivors include her husband: Alvin Ray Stokes, I, of Pampa: three daughters, Pattie Herrin and husband Tony of Cleveland, Texas; Brenda Gardner and husband Bill of Pampa; and Lesa Mooney and husband Gary of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; three sisters, Peggy Harrell of Ballinger, Charline Reynolds of Amarillo, and Pat McAnear of Clarendon; 11 grandchildren, Alvin Ray “Tre” Stokes, III, Johnny D. Aufleger, and Joshua L. Brack, all of Pampa; Joseph E. Aufleger of Camp Pendleton, California; Michael M. “Chi” Brack of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; Gabriel N. “Gabe” Brack of Kuwait; Holly Nachole Mills of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Amy Lea Trimble of Stillwater, Oklahoma; Cleta Annell “Nelly” Stith of Chandler, Oklahoma; Marinda Elizabeth Mooney and Heather Nacole Mooney, both of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; and three great grandchildren, Kaittlynne Aufleger Porter of Lefors, Kellan Stokes and Callyer Stokes, both of Pampa.
