Funeral services for Jiggs Land, age 86, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 19, in Robertson Chapel of Memories with Rev. Darrell Burton, Martin Baptist Church pastor, officiating. Burial will be held at Rowe Cemetery in Hedley with military honors under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc.
Mr. Land died Monday, January 16, in Amarillo. He was born November 15, 1919, in Hedley to Zeb Land and Ruth Durham Land. Jiggs married Geraldine McCalister on August 16, 1952, in Clovis, New Mex. Prior to his marriage, he served in the US Army’s 349th Infantry during World War II. He loved his country and was proud to fly the American flag. Jiggs owned a barbecue restaurant in Perryton before moving back to Donley County in 1971, where he worked as a farmer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarendon and VFW Post 7782.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers – Roscoe Land, Pete Land, and Jack Land; six sisters, Vivian Cason, Essie Mae Scales, Millie Land, Ellen Fay Land, Hazel Land, and Jonnie Hill.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Land of Lelia Lake; two daughters, Darlene Masters of Weatherford, Oklahoma, and Karen Wiple of Las Vegas, Nevada; one brother, Zebbie Land of Memphis; one sister, Margie Bailey of Hedley; three grandchildren, Gina McKinney, Shannon Ring, and Ron Ring; five great grandchildren, Timmy McKinney, Mandy Burrow, Devin Ring, Levi Scrivner, and Shelby Scrivner; and one great great grandchild, Jesse Burrow.
