James W. “Jim” Douglas

James W. “Jim” Douglas of Clarendon, Texas, died on Thursday, March 23, 2006, in Clarendon.  He was 77 years old.

Jim Douglas was born February 10, 1929, to Clyde J. and Dorinda Tatum Douglas in Clarendon.  Jim attended Clarendon schools, graduating from Clarendon High School and Clarendon College in 1946. He entered the University of Texas Pharmacy School in 1946 and graduated in 1949.

Jim served in the United States Navy as a Corpsman attached to the 1st Marine Division for four years.  He was stationed in San Diego, California, and Brimmerton, Washington, before being deployed to Korea from 1952-1953. Following his discharge from the Navy, Jim returned to his career as a pharmacist.

On July 21, 1961, Jim married Mary Sanders in Irving, Texas.  In November of 1961, Jim and Mary opened Douglas Pharmacy, which they owned and operated for eleven years.

Jim’s long career in pharmaceuticals included time as President of PAS, Inc., and Family RX Systems.  He was an active member of the Dallas County Pharmaceutical Association, the American Pharmaceutical Association, and was an American College of Apothecaries’ Fellow.

Throughout his life, Jim sought to capture on film the beauty of the places he and Mary traveled together.  Among his favorite sites were Austin, Texas; Estes Park, Colorado; San Diego, California; Hawaii; and the Panhandle of Texas.  Jim’s photographs capture the uniqueness of every landscape, and they demonstrate his own appreciation for the natural beauty of his subjects.

Much of Jim’s free time was spent exploring the outdoors.  A fly fisherman since childhood, Jim spent countless hours seeking out prime locations.  Fly-fishing, naturally a graceful, patient sport, spoke to Jim’s personality and generosity of spirit.

Jim Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde J. and Dorinda Douglas, and his brother, Clyde B. Douglas.  He is survived by and grieved for by his beloved wife of 44 years, Mary L. Douglas, and their adored dog, Squeaky Marie.  A host of friends at home and abroad mourn the loss of this extraordinary man.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 31, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Clarendon.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks the donations be made to the Medical Center Nursing Home in Clarendon, Burton Memorial Library in Clarendon, Odyssey Hospice Continuous Care in Amarillo, or to the Howardwick Volunteer Fire Department (designated for fireman medical expenses).

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Clarendon High School Class of 1946.
