Funeral services for Herbert Dayle Edes, age 61, were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2006, in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel in Amarillo with Dick Marcear of the Church of Christ at the Colonies, officiating. Burial was held in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo.
Mr. Edes died Wednesday, May 10, 2006. He was born November 10, 1944, in Amarillo. He worked as a truck driver and rancher most of his life. He also worked as a butcher for many years. He served in the US Army First Cavalry Infantry from 1963 to 1970 during which time he served two tours in Vietnam. He received the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star (September 16, 1968), and the Silver Star (age 23). A soldier who served with Herb stated that no one but him knew he had received the Silver Star; and when he told the officials in Washington, DC, Herb’s response was that everyone should have received it. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and friends.
He was a Catholic.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Edes, Sr., and mother Mattie Edes Harris.
Survivors include a daughter, Leah and husband Brian Price of Waco; a grandson, Trey Price of Waco; two brothers, Carl E. Edes, Jr., and wife Judy of Berryton, Kansas, and Melvin Edes and wife Kathy of Amarillo; a twin sister, Gayle Edes of Clarendon; nephews, Randy Edes, Allen Shankles and wife Carrie, Ken Dorris and wife Amy all of Amarillo, and Robert Babcock of Lubbock; nieces, Lisa Edes of Amarillo; great nieces, Jordan Dorris of Dallas and Alexia Shankles of San Francisco, California; and great nephew, Eric Dorris, of Amarillo.
