Monte O’Neill Weatherly, 84, died Saturday, January 31, 2009, in Childress.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, in the First Baptist Church in Hedley with Rev. Bruce Howard, Pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors followed at Rowe Cemetery in Hedley. Services were under the arrangement of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.
O’Neill was born February 23, 1924, in Estelline, to Charlie and Pauline Weatherly. He attended school at Lakeview and lived at Deep Lake. He moved to Donley County in 1942. He married Sue McKee on February 17, 1946, in Hedley. He was a World War II veteran serving in the US Army. He was the City Manager in Hedley for 35 years from 1952-1987 and the Justice of the Peace for 30 years from 1960-1990. He was also in the Hedley Lions Club for several years and served as treasurer. He was on the Hedley Volunteer Fire Department and served as Fire Chief. He was also in the Hedley American Legion for 59 years and served as secretary. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hedley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Phalen Weatherly in 1967; and a great grandson, Xander Weatherly in 2004.
Survivors include his wife, Sue of Hedley; a son, Gary “Butch” Weatherly and wife Nancy of Memphis; two brothers, Vance Grisham and wife Sandra of Amarillo, and Rex Grisham and wife Barbara of Topeka, Kansas; two grandsons, Scot Weatherly of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Curtis Weatherly of Bessie, Okla.; and two great grandchildren, Tanner Michael Weatherly and Truette Rose Weatherly.
The family requests memorials be made to Rowe Cemetery Association or the Hedley Senior Citizens.
