Cloyd Monroe Burton, 89, died Friday, June 19, 2009, in Amarillo.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in the First Baptist Church in Claude with Rev. Darrell Burton, grandson and pastor of Martin Baptist Church in Clarendon officiating. Burial followed at Claude Cemetery in Claude Services were under the arrangement of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.
Mr. Burton was born February 29, 1920, northeast of Bard, N.M. to Ezra Blain and Dollie Oleva Starkey Burton. He attended school at Porter, N.M. and San Jon, N.M. He married Winnie Evelyn Mote on April 19, 1941, in Clovis, N.M. They lived in eastern New Mexico for a time, then moved to the Washburn community in Armstrong County in September 1943. They ranched and farmed until 1970, at which time Mr. Burton went to work for Crudgington Oil delivering fuel and oil until 1982. Mr. Burton was a member of the First
Baptist Church in Claude, where he served as a deacon. He was a longtime member of the Fairview Community Neighbors and served as a school board member of the Claude Independent School District.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie on February 17, 2006; and his parents.
Survivors include his children, Judy Bynum and husband W.A. of Big Spring, Kenneth Burton and wife Patsy of Whiteface, and Linda Smith and husband Jerry of Stockton, Calif.; two sisters, Elsie Wiseman and Mildred Mote, and one brother, Norman Burton; five grandchildren, Darrell Burton, Wanda Cox, Cecil Bynum, Cindy Sturdivant and Lorrie McCampbell; 11 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
The pallbearers were his grandsons, while his nephews served as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to City Church Outreach Ministry, 205 S. Polk St, Amarillo, Texas, 79101 or New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, 324 South Abilene Ave, Portales, NM, 88130.
