Olla Johnnie “Peggie” DeBord, 105, died Monday, August 24, 2009, in Childress.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2009, in the Hedley Church of Christ with Bright Newhouse, Minister, and Connie and Jerry DeBord, her sons, officiating. Burial was held in Rowe Cemetery in Hedley. Services were under the arrangement of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.
Olla “Peggie” DeBord was born August 23, 1904, in Sulphur Springs to John and Mildred Nelson Rogers. She departed this life on August 24, 2009, at the age of 105 years and 1 day. She was the second child of a family of eight children. At an early age she moved with her family to Commerce where she attended public school and two years of college at East Texas State College. In 1926 she moved to McKnight and began a teaching career. After teaching one year she moved on to Goldston and taught one year. Both schools were in Donley County. While teaching in McKnight she met M.C. “Slats” DeBord and they were married May 1, 1928, in Commerce, Texas. They made their home in the McKnight area where they raised their four children. She resumed her teaching career during World War II at Quail where she taught until her retirement in 1965. Peggie and Slats moved to Hedley, Texas in 1958, where she continued to make her home. She loved to play 42, a domino game, and was extremely hard to beat. She was an avid reader, enjoyed working crossword puzzles and being with family and friends. Some highlights of her life were getting to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary, her 60th wedding anniversary, a surprise 90th birthday party, and her 100th birthday party.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Slats; one son-in-law, Waldo Emerson; her parents, John and Mildred Rogers; 5 brothers, Uhles, R.L., Weldon, J.L., and Joe; and a sister, Ollie Adair.
She is survived by three sons, Connie DeBord and wife Mahdeene of Hedley, Dewey DeBord and wife Ellen of Sunray, and Jerry DeBord and wife Judy of Brady; one daughter, Patricia Emerson of Cordell, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; six grand-in-laws; six great grand-in-laws; a sister, Jean Malone of Tyler; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous other relatives and friends.
The family requests memorials be to the Rowe Cemetery Association or the Hedley Sr. Citizens.
