Clarendon High School’s recent jailbird lockup project to raise funds for the PEAK Scholarship Program took in approximately $10,000 before several jailbirds were released from a temporary cell last Tuesday evening, May 18.
The cage for the jailbirds was set up along the highway in front of Country Bloomers Flowers & Gifts.
Jailbirds reaching or exceeding their financial goals included Bill Auvenshine, Jim Shelton, Mike Butts, Sherrol Johnston, Bobbie Thornberry, Courtney Newhouse, Nancy Davis, and Larry Jeffers.
Three other jailbirds – Susie Shields, Robin Ellis, and Tex Selvidge – escaped jail by being out of town but still reached their financial goals.
The PEAK Scholarship Program (Promoting Education, Achievement, And Knowledge) is designed to pay tuition and fees for eligible Clarendon High School graduates to attend Clarendon College after all other financial resources are applied.
PEAK is regarded as a vital program which gives local students vision and hope for their future beyond high school.
Event organizers expressed special appreciation to all the jailbirds and their friends and relatives who donated money to this worthwhile cause.
Once again the community has demonstrated generous support of its students and continues to take pride in its community college.
