Family fun and entertainment is in store in Hedley this weekend as the community prepares to celebrate its 60th annual Cotton Festival.
The Hedley Lions Club will get things rolling at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 7, with a Chili & Stew Dinner.
Saturday’s activities begin with breakfast burritos provided by the City Council at 7 a.m. with proceeds going the Rowe Cemetery Fund. All food and craft booths set up at 9 a.m., and bingo games begin at the Senior Citizens Center at that time also. At 10 a.m., sign-ups begin for the car show and the jelly/jam contest. The midway also opens at 10 a.m. with pony rides, cow patty bingo, and chicken drop bingo.
At 11 a.m., jelly and jam tasting gets started on the Midway, the Rowe Cemetery bake sale starts in City Hall, and the free quilt show starts at the Lioness Club.
The Lions Club will serve barbecue for lunch, and the Senior Citizens will have stew and cornbread all day.
The Kiddie Parade and the announcement of the Little Cotton Princess will be held at 1:15 p.m., followed by the regular parade at 2 p.m.
Following the parades, the midway, bingo, and other entertainment will continue, and an ex-students reunion will be held at the school. Raffles and drawings will all be held at 6 p.m. at the Lions Club.
The ex-students reunion will continue from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Big Red Barn on Blair Street, and then a Western dance will be held at that same location from 9 p.m. to midnight featuring the sounds of Hillbilly Stu with Hedley’s own Landon Shields. The cost for the dance is $10, and kids under 12 get in free with a parent.
