Donley County voters agreed with the majority of voters across Texas November 8 in approving six amendments to the state constitution.
Participation was very low in the election with only 8.6 percent of county voters casting ballots. A total of 207 people took the time to go to the polls.
Local voters approved Propositions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 10. Voters across Texas also approved those measures and Proposition 9 as well.
The amendments approved will: 1) Authorize the legislature to provide the surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran with an exemption from ad valorem taxation on a homestead; 2) Authorize the Texas Water Development Board to issue additional general obligation bonds not exceed $6 billion; 3) Authorize the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board or its successors to issue bonds financing educational loans for students; 5) Allow cities and counties to enter into interlocal contracts with other cities and counties without having to assess an ad valorem tax and set aside a specified amount of funds for the payment of costs under the interlocal contract; 6) Increase the amount of principal that is available for withdrawal from the permanent school fund each year; 9) Authorize the governor to grant a pardon to a person who successfully completes a term of deferred adjudication; and 10) Extend the length of the unexpired term that causes the automatic resignation of certain local elected officeholders if they announce candidacy or become candidates for another office from one year to one year and 30 days.
