CC planning 2012 Kid’s College

 Planning for Kids’ College at Clarendon College is underway, and this year the college is reaching out to the public to find instructors and new course ideas.

Organizers are seeking anyone with a skill, talent, hobby, or interest that would make for a fun, educational experience.

“We are really hoping to find instructors and course ideas that we would have never thought of,” Ashlee Estlack, CC Marketing Coordinator said.

“There are a lot of talented people in our community, and we would love for them to share those talents with these students.”

Students from ages 5-15 are eligible to participate in Kids’ College and courses run the entire months of June and July.

“Kids College is a great summer enrichment program, and by working together with the community we can continue to grow and improve our offerings and the experiences for these students,” Estlack said.

Last summer, 33 courses were offered including new offerings such as Build a Box Kite, Sculpture Class, and Job Shadowing.

Six file for three HISD positions

The Hedley Independent School District will hold the only contested local election in Donley County this spring, and five other governments will likely cancel their elections due to a lack of participation.

Six candidates – none of them incumbents – are vying for two open seats on the Hedley School Board. Those running are Michael Metcalf, Sr.; Dee Smith; Dana Bell; Mark Howard; Donnie Chambless; Connie Wheatly.

The top two vote-earners will take the seats currently held by Lana Ritchie and Bobby Lindsey.

Voters in the City of Clarendon will go to the polls to determine the fate of a $700,000 bond issue for street improvements, but they will not have any choices in who will represent them on the Board of Aldermen. Incumbents Will Thompson and Jesus Hernandez will be joined by Abby Patten as the only three candidates for three positions on the board.

The City of Howardwick only had one candidate apply for three positions on its Board of Aldermen, and no one signed up for the unexpired term of former mayor Del Essary.

Robert Brewster will be a new Howardwick alderman, and the city will have to appoint people to fill the other seats. The board will hold its next meeting on Thursday, March 15.

The Clarendon College District, the Donley County Hospital District, Clarendon ISD, and the City of Hedley only had their incumbents sign up with no challengers.

The hospital board met in called session Monday night to formally cancel its election, and the college, CISD, and City of Hedley are expected to follow suit.

Election Day for the City of Clarendon and the Hedley School Board will be Saturday, May 12.

Clarendon Little Dribblers win championship game

The Clarendon Broncos 6th grade team competed in the Memphis Little Dribblers tournament this weekend and won the championship game. On a high note

The Clarendon High School Bronco Band earned a Sweepstakes “A” for the 2011-2012 school year last Tuesday, February 28, when they earned straight “one” ratings from six judges – three in sightreading and three in concert performance – at the Regional Concert and Sightreading Contest. The Bronco Band also received a division one in the Marching Contest back in October, which gives them the Sweepstakes for the year. Junior Historians advance to State

Clarendon High School’s Junior Historians are advancing to State competition February 27 CHS students competed in the Regional History Day competition on February 25 at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum in Canyon. Those advancing to state NHD are Jerah Luna: 1st Historical Paper; Kae Hewett and Samantha Sanderson: 1st Group Performance and Women in History Award; Liz Best: 1st Individual Performance; Maritta Brady: 1st Individual Documentary; Nathan Dziedzic: 2nd Individual Exhibit; MiKayla Shadle: 2nd Historical Paper and Texas History; Excellent Ratings (Non-Advancing) Jerami Johnson, Abby Johnson, and Minnie Buckhaults. Varsity Broncos slam Arbor Academy, 9-3

The Bronco baseball team took control of Arbor Academy Saturday, defeating them 9-3.  The Broncos struck early going up 6-1 after two innings setting a rhythm for the game.

According to head coach Brad Elam, the Broncos increased their lead by seven runs after the fourth inning but fell off offensively after that scoring rally. 

“We were unable to do much offensively after the fourth, but it was enough to hold them off,” Elam said.  “The first four innings, we looked really good swinging the bat.  We hit their lefthander who shut us down the first game.”

Elam recorded that Caleb Mitchell scored two runs and had two stolen bases, and Trevor Cobb posted a huge day at the plate scoring three runs and driving in four.  Jerami Johnson had two hits and stole three bases and Rowdy Speed had two hits and an RBI.

“Defensively, we played extremely well and made some outstanding plays,” Elam said.  “Dillon Nickell had a great diving catch, and Chance McAnear and Dusty Rice each threw out a runner from deep right field.”

Elam was pleased with the pitching from Rice, Gage Nelson, Cobb, and Mitchell who held them to only three runs while striking out 11 and walking only one.

The Broncos will continue their season at home March 16 against Arbor Academy at 1:00 p.m.

Lady Broncos start season with shut out in home game

The Lady Bronco softball team is off to a great start this season and earned a run-rule win over Fritch at 20-0.  Trevela Dronzek and Camra Smith shared the mound, and Audrey Shelton was behind the plate.

The ladies earned two runs in the first inning and then exploded in the following at bat scoring 13 runs to take a huge lead.  They added another in the third and four more in the fourth to end the game.  Jentry Shadle and Maci White each hit a double in the game.

The ladies open district play Saturday, March 10 at McLean beginning at 1:00 p.m.  They will play San Jacinto on Thursday, March 15, at home at 2:00 p.m.

Rev. James Ivey Edwards

Services were held for Rev. James Ivey Edwards on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Clarendon with Rev. Jay Gage of Midland officiating.

James was born on November 17, 1943, in Bainbridge, Georgia, to James Bruce Edwards  and Von Biggs Edwards. He was raised in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High School. He attended college at West Texas State University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas.  He married Donna Gentry in 1965 in Amarillo. James was a professional artist specializing in Western and wildlife landscapes and bronze sculpture and later taught Art at Clarendon College before entering full-time ministry in the Methodist church in 1990. He has recently served on the board of Habitat for Humanity, and has been involved in Boy Scouts and Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization in Artesia, New Mexico.

James was in active ministry at the time of his death at the First United Methodist Church of Artesia, New Mexico. He served faithfully and lovingly in ministry for the Lord in the Methodist church for 22 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a newborn son, and a 17 year old son, Scott, and a brother, Ronald Perry Edwards.

His survived his wife, Donna, of 46 years; two daughters, Andrea and husband Larry Hayward of Weatherford, Texas, and Kelly and husband Corey O’Brien of Dallas; five grandchildren Jordan and Adalyn of Weatherford, and Caden, Conner, and Kenna O’Brien of Dallas; a brother John and wife Donna of Colleyville; and an aunt, Fran Biggs of Stanton; Martha Gentry of Amarillo; and several nieces and nephews and other dear family members.

The family requests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Artesia, New Mexico, or First United Methodist Church of Clarendon.
