Learn the answers to these questions and many more about the chuckwagon on Friday, September 21, at the Saints’ Roost Museum during Chuckwagon Edcuation Day.
The museum is sponsoring the 18th annual Col. Charles Goodnight Chuckwagon Cookoff and hosting 18 wagons for the competition. Chuckwagons from the Panhandle area and as far away as Abilene and San Jon, New Mexico, will be setting up on Friday to compete in Saturday’s cookoff.
Several wagons will arrive early to host students from Clarendon, Hedley, and area schools for a day of learning about the chuck wagon and cooking the cowboy-way over an open fire.
Everyone is invited to come to the museum grounds on Friday any time between 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to meet the chuckwagon owners whose passion for keeping the history of the 1880s cattle drive and chuckwagon era alive the chuckwagon owners will inform and entertain you.
On Saturday, September 22, the Museum invites everyone to participate in the trade show activities as the cooks prepare food for competition. At 1:00 p.m. the chuckwagons will serve a meal consisting of chicken fried steak, potatoes, beans, rolls, and peach cobbler.
