A Clarendon man is back in custody after escaping from the Donley County Jail at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5.
Torrence Smith (a.k.a. Torrence Brown), age 40, overpowered a jailer, threw her down, took her keys, and fled the jail, Sheriff Butch Blackburn said. The inmate then stole the jailer’s car and fled the city.
“With the help of people watching the highway, we were notified that he was on North Hwy. 70,” the sheriff said.
Gray County deputies joined the hunt at Interstate 40. Smith was running at speeds up to 105 mph and continued on Hwy. 70, dodging spike strips before heading into Pampa.
The chase entered the side streets of Pampa before a Donley County Deputy finally rammed his Ford patrol truck into the Pontiac that was being driven by Smith.
Smith was treated for minor injuries at a Pampa hospital before being transported back to the Donley County Jail.
Blackburn said Wednesday that his office will be filing additional new charges against Smith, including escape and a first degree felony assault charge. Smith was already facing felony charges for evading arrest and seven counts of forgery.
The jailer did not suffer any major injuries during escape, the sheriff said.
