Three Clarendon High School graduates of 2012 have been awarded scholarships by the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation.
Adam Topper, Lydia Howard, and Maritta Brady each received $1,000 awards for outstanding records of academic and extracurricular achievement, according to a University Interscholastic League press release this week.
Topper received the Nike Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, payable the first year of higher education.
Topper competed in science at the 2011 UIL Academic State Meet. He also competed in UIL basketball and graduated second in his class. Topper is the first in his family to attend college. He plans to attend West Texas A&M University and major in Criminal Justice.
Howard received the T.C. Campbell Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, payable the first year of higher education.
Howard competed in science at the 2011, 2012 and 2013 UIL Academic State Meet. At the 2012 State Meet, she also won a state championship in headline writing. Howard also competed in UIL basketball and graduated first in her class. She plans to attend Amarillo College and major in Elementary Education.
Brady received the Dr. Charles & Estella Akins Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, payable the first year of higher education. Brady ranked 2nd in her graduating class and advanced to the state meet three times in her high school career, competing in UIL spelling & vocabulary and computer applications. She was a member of her high school band, participated in one-act play, and was a member of the Spanish Club and the National Honor Society.
Brady plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in Graphic Design.
This year the TILF awarded 411 new scholarships and will renew 179 multi-year awards for a total of 590 scholarships being distributed during the 2013-14 academic year, with a value of over $1.1 million. Recipients must attend any approved college or university in Texas.
