AMARILLO – 4-H members from 22 counties in the Panhandle qualified at the District I 4-H Roundup in Borger on Nov. 2 to compete in the state competition June 10-14 at Texas A&M University, College Station, according to Shawnte Clawson, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service 4-H and youth development specialist.
4-H Roundup is a public speaking and talent event providing 4-H members the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills learned through 4-H projects, Clawson said. 4-H is the youth program of AgriLife Extension.
Goals of the project include: Learn about organization of materials to present in a speech or performance. Acquire the ability to speak convincingly in public. Become aware of one’s relationship to others – family, peers, state, nation and world. Acquire life skills essential for an individual to become an active, responsible citizen. Learn about vocational choices and career opportunities and preparation related to the focus of a project.
Nearly 200 youth competed in the 25 activities, including speaking events, quiz bowls, educational presentations and performing arts, Clawson said. Senior winners will advance to state competition. Recognition of district award winners was given in ceremonies at Frank Phillips College in Borger.
Local winners of the District 1 Roundup Contest and the counties they represented are as follow:
Horse Quiz Bowl – Junior: 1. Donley 2 – Brenna Ellis, Laney Gates, Hadleigh Halsell, Malerie Simpson; 2. Donley 1 – Ethan Babcock, Calder Havens, Jodee Pigg.
Intermediates: 2. Donley 1 – Tanner Burch, Brandalyn Ellis, Emily Johnson, Clay Ward; 3. Donley 2 – Harm Drenth, Darcie Hunsaker, Braylee Shields.
Senior: 2. Donley – Payton Havens, Kade Hunsaker, Kelsey McAnear, Alysse Simpson.
Beef Quiz Bowl:
Senior: 1. Donley – Katie Adams, Blaine Ellis, Tres Hommel, Jake Owens.
