Clarendon awards paving bid
The Clarendon Board of Aldermen awarded a contract for street paving to MH Civil Constructors, Inc., during their regular meeting last Tuesday, April 22.
The Amarillo-based contractor submitted the only bid for work that was authorized by city voters in 2012. The bid with alternates was for a total of $677,362.56.
The project will include Sixth Street from Koogle to Goodnight Street; Third Street from Allen to Bugbee Avenue; Allen Street, from Third to Fifth; Sims Street from Third to Fourth (west side of Broncho Stadium); and Carhart Street, from Sixth to Hwy. 287.
A two-block section of Sixth Street beside the baseball fields will be paved in concrete, while the rest of the streets will be two-pass seal coats with either rollover curb and gutter or standard curb and gutter. City employees will do the excavating for the curbing as well as the base work for the paving.
The project also calls for seal coating Clarendon Avenue from Bugbee to its west end (along the south side of the Clarendon College campus) and Regent Avenue from US 287 to Clarendon Ave. (which winds up the middle of the CC campus by the Bulldog Gym).
Mayor Larry Hicks told aldermen he hopes the project is completed by October 1.
In other business, Aldermen approved clean audits of the city and the economic development corporation; authorized the purchase of eight new computers for the Burton Memorial Library through the Harrington Library Consortium, and awarded $1,000 to the Christ’s Kids Ministry for its summer lunch program.
Aldermen resumed discussion of proposed regulations of gaming machines. Alderman Doug Kidd asked for more information and expressed reservations about the city making money on a business of questionable legality, but Alderman Larry Jeffers said he thought the city should regulate the business whether it made any revenue or not. No action was taken.
Chamber honors Carters, Hall
The Clarendon Chamber of Commerce honored Steve and Janet Carter as its Man and Woman of the Year for 2013 during an awards dinner last Thursday, April 24, at the Bairfield Activity Center.
Ten people were honored by the Chamber, including the Carters and Donley County Judge Jack Hall, who received the Chamber’s highest honor, the Saints’ Roost Award.
Hall spent three decades as a coach and teacher at Clarendon Public Schools before retiring and then becoming county judge about 17 years ago. Hall’s influence and support was one of the principal factors in the successful restoration of the 1890 Donley County Courthouse, and he has carefully promoted and protected the landmark building since the project was completed in 2003.
The Carters were recognized for selfless devotion to children in Clarendon through the Christ’s Kids ministry. Steve and Janet run the summer food program, which runs five days a week and delivers to kids’ homes. They help organize the community Thanksgiving meal and have worked with the Angel Tree program, the Boy Scouts of America, and other activities.
Amanda Askew and Jeremy Powell were named the Volunteers of the Year. Askew has helped at the Saints’ Roost Museum and other community needs, including the Chamber’s Christmas Bazaar last December. Powell serves as Clarendon’s Fire Marshall and Fire Chief and gives freely of his time working for the safety of the entire county. He maintains all the required paperwork for the volunteer fire department and spends many hours on fire prevention and fire safety issues.
Jack Moreman was named the Pioneer of the Year. He grew up in Hedley and has spent a lifetime in service to others, helping with the VFW, the American Legion, the Saints’ Roost Museum, and Clarendon College. Moreman started the college’s Ranch & Feedlot Operations program and currently serves on the CC Board of Regents. He has also given a lifetime of service to the First United Methodist Church, where he helps with the United Christians Breakfast each month.
The Young Man and Woman of the Year from Hedley High School were Denver Chambless and Kristen Liner. Chambless has been involved with football, tennis, golf, and FFA and was recognized for his positive attitude as a role model for other students. Liner has been involved with NHS, athletics, UIL events, cheerleading, and One Act Play and was recognized for helping with food drives and Christmas drives for the elderly and less fortunate children as well as being a role model for others.
The Young Man and Woman of the Year from Clarendon High School were Tyler Smith and Deborah Howard. Smith is a member of the Bronco Band as well as being active in French Club and UIL events, placing second in UIL Editorial Writing at district this year. He is active in the United Methodist Youth and is very involved in Boy Scouts of America with the rank of Eagle. Howard has been involved in NHS, cross country, basketball, band, theatre, and yearbook. She has been a UIL regional qualifier and was the 2013 CHS Homecoming Queen.
About 130 people attended this year’s awards ceremony, up from 45 people last year.
Chamber President Bonnie Campbell conducted a business meeting for Chamber member prior to the start of last week’s awards dinner. New bylaws for the Chamber were previously made available to Chamber members and were unanimously adopted by the general membership.
H’wick pair nabbed for burglary
Two Howardwick residents were in the Donley County Jail for burglarizing the Sandell Drive-In as the Enterprise went to press Tuesday.
Sheriff Butch Blackburn said Brenda Blevins and Jeffrey Wyrick were arrested Monday, April 28, for Possession of Stolen Property after officers executed a search warrant at their home at 258 Palacia Drive in Howardwick.
Among the items found in the home was a large amount of candy and a trash believed to have been stolen from the drive-in theatre in Clarendon on either April 23 or April 24.
Blackburn said his office will be filing burglary charges on both individuals for the Sandell break-in. He also said his office is investigating evidence taken from the home that appears to be related to an April 26 break-in at the Howardwick Baptist Church.
Blevins, age 28, has a small criminal history, but Wyrick, age 32, has an “extensive” criminal history, the sheriff said.
According to Enterprise files, Wyrick was arrested on August 25 of last year in connection with three local burglaries, including one at the Clarendon Country Club from which a large safe was stolen.
Clarendon first graders go on daylong field trip
All the first graders went to the saddle shop, and we met Mr. Anderberg and we got to see what saddles are made of. Then we went to the boot shop and met Jim Owens. We learned that he will trace someone’s foot and then he will make the boot.
We went to the Museum, and we first went to the Indian Room and second
we went to Mr. Bugbee’s room. He was an artist who drew sketches and smoked a pipe. The Museum has his pipe. We went to the Newspaper Room, and I told them all about the Enterprise. I told them that it has been in my family for many years, and now my Dad owns it, and soon I will, too.
The class went to the City Park to eat lunch and had recess there as well.
We went to Charles Goodnight’s house. Mrs. Goodnight wanted to save some buffalo from being hurt or even killed. Mr. Goodnight was one of the first Texas Rangers, and there was a longhorn who was the main one in Goodnight’s cattle drive and his name was Old Blue.
Family affair at State Track Meet
By Sandy Anderberg
Cousins Sarah Luttrell and Abby Johnson are headed to the state track meet with recent accomplishments in the Regional Track Meet held in Levelland.
Luttrell competed and qualified in the 100-meter dash and Johnson qualified in the 400-meter dash. Bronco Charles Mason earned a wildcard spot in the long jump and qualified for the state meet.
Luttrell and Johnson have been active all season and were successful in posting great times in their races. Mason sat out the first part of the season healing a hamstring injury and participated in only about four meets.
Luttrell competed in the 100, 200, long jump, and sprint relay. She finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.72 for a state trip and Johnson had a time of 1:01.77 in the 400-meter dash for second place and a trip to Austin. Mason recorded a jump of 22’7½” for third place and a wildcard. That card came through for him and he will jump at the state meet the second weekend of May.
The Lady Bronco sprint relay competed at the Regional meet and finished in seventh place with a time of 53.17 and was run by Amelia Weatherton Taylor Gaines, Taylor DeGrate, and Sarah Luttrell. Weatherton also competed in the 100-meter dash finishing with a time of 13.19. DeGrate gave it a good shot in the 100-meter hurdles and finished just two out of qualifying in fourth place with a time of 16.70.
Luttrell also long jumped at a distance of 16’7¾” for sixth place and Gaines finished fifteenth in that event with a distance of 15’0″. Luttrell and Johnson competed in the 200-meter dash and finished fifth and sixth with times of 27.71 and 27.89 respectively. Caleb Cobb made a great attempt in the 800-meter run finishing fifteenth with a time of 2:17.61.
Coach Alton Gaines was pleased with his athletes’ performance at the regional meet.
“It was an awesome effort by the girls,” Gaines said. “Each girl put themselves in a position to get one of the two top spots; we just came up a little short in some events. But we did get two girls that qualified for the State Meet. Sarah Luttrell and Abby Johnson did a great job. We are very proud and thankful to be their coaches.”
Broncos pull off win against West Texas
By Sandy Anderberg
With a huge 12-2 win over West Texas, the Broncos are headed to post-season play on Thursday of this week.
The game will be played at home on McClelland Field against Hale Center beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Coach Brad Elam knew his team had to win to participate in post-season play and felt they came into the game with WT focused to do just that.
“A win would put us in the playoff and the kids came focused and ended the game after five,” Elam said. “We had a 5-2 lead after the top of the fourth and had a big inning to break the game open. Bryce Hatley had a big game reaching base all four times including a big triple and Caleb Cobb had two hits and drove in two runs.”
Elam went on to say that Brandon Miller reached base all four times, had two rbi, scored two runs and stole two bases. Zack LaRoe had two runs scored and Keandre Cortez had a big two-out hit driving in two runs.
“Chance McAnear pitched another great game to pick up the win striking out nine,” Elam said.
On the Friday before, the Broncos suffered a disappointing loss to Follett on the road at 2-6. Elam said he played younger kids and they did not have enough hits despite playing fairly well.
“I was pleased by their effort and we had chances to win, but just didn’t hit enough,” Elam said. “We struck out too many times.”
However, Elam thought there was a positive in the loss.
“On the positive side, Chance Lockhart pitched a good game once he got warmed up striking out eight,” he said.
“Mikeal LaRoe made several plays at third base and on offense, after a Lockhart walk, Clay Koetting doubled him in in the first inning. McAnear scored in the third inning.”
The Broncos slammed Shamrock 15-6 last week, giving them a better look at post-season play.
According to Elam, the Broncos played five really good innings.
“We played a pretty good game until we made some mistakes in the sixth inning that cost us and allowed them to get back in the game,” Elam said.
“We jumped out in the lead with five in the first three innings sparked by Brandon Miller and Clay Koetting who reached base in the second and third innings, scoring four runs. We were able to score eight in the seventh to really pull away.”
Miller ended up with two hits, reached base four times, stole three bases and scored three runs. According to Elam, Chance McAnear also had a big day at the plate getting two hits and scoring three runs. Koetting had a monster day batting reaching base all five times, driving in two runs, and scoring four times.
“McAnear pitched a good game going five and two thirds innings,” Elam said. “Caleb Cobb came in and closed the game out.”
Lady Broncos play warm-up game against Fritch
By Sandy Anderberg
The Lady Broncos finished their year at 15-4 overall and 9-3 in District for a second place finish in their district race.
Clarendon took on Ralls in the first game of the playoffs scheduled for April 30. Results will be printed in next week’s Enterprise.
In a warm-up game, the Lady Broncos played Fritch and, according to head coach Gary Jack, got the revenge they were looking for.
“We came out on top 10-9,” Jack said. “It was good to get to play in between district and the playoffs. We did ok revenging an early season loss to Fritch.
“They beat us in our first game with only two practices, but we did a little better this time.”
The Lady Broncos will have played Ralls by press time, but they have high hopes to move on in post-season play.
“We play Ralls in the Bi-District round this Tuesday,” Jack said. “This is the same Ralls team that beat us in the playoffs last year. They are always a very solid team.”
