Services for Mr. J.R. Steele, of Memphis will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Garland Street Church of Christ in Plainview, with Minister Steve Gauntt, officiating. Burial will follow at Silverton Cemetery, in Silverton, Tex, at 2:00 p.m. under the direction of Peppers Family Funeral Home in Memphis.
Mr. Steele, 96, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014, in Amarillo.
Mr. J.R. Steele was born March 25, 1918, to the late Mr. James Richard Steele and Mrs. Lula Bell Brady Steele in Silverton. He graduated from Silverton High School. J.R. married Verba Lee Newland in Plainview. She preceded him in death February 16, 2008.
Mr. Steele served in the United States Navy and the United States Navy reserve. J.R. worked and retired from the USPS, then went on to work in carpentry for 15 years. He moved from Plainview to Memphis in 2013. Mr. Steele was a member of Garland Church of Christ and Silverton Church of Christ.
J.R. is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter, Constance Eugenia Steele, 3 brothers, Jeff, Wade and Alton Steele, 3 sisters, Fanny Francis, Lillie Mercer, and Annie Springer.
Mr. Steele is survived by his son, Raymond Lee Steele of Memphis, 2 daughters, Joann Steele Garcia of Bullhead City, AZ and Kim Jeffrey and husband, Bill of Hedley, 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren.
