Bronco Stadium was full of Bronco fever Friday night as the home team posted its first win to go 1-0 in District play. The Broncos fought hard and was able to shut down the Longhorns’ and hand them a one point loss at 20-19. After Lockney’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Broncos stopped the extra point which gave them the one-point win.
“This was a big win for us,” head coach Gary Jack said. “We played well.”
The Broncos hit first when senior Charles Mason scampered 46 yards for six to give Clarendon the early lead. But Lockney answered back to lead by one. After a scoreless second quarter and after Lockney put six more on the board, it was Mason once again who teamed up with quarterback Zack LaRoe to make good on a 30-yard pass with Jonathan Taylor adding the bonus kick to tie the game at 13 all. Cedrick McCampbell added the final blow to the Longhorns as he grabbed a 45-yard pass from LaRoe for a touchdown and Taylor once again earned the extra point.
“We started off good and had chances to put them away early in the game,” Jack said. “But we didn’t finish off our drives and were a little inconsistent. We let them back in the game and there was a momentum change at the half.”
But the Broncos regrouped and stayed determined to get the win.
“We didn’t have any turnovers in the game, and that was tremendous,” Jack said.
The Broncos racked up 244 total yards while posting 11 first downs in the game.
“Charles and Cedrick had some big catches for us,” Jack said. “We got back into the lead and held on. The win was good for the kids.”
Jack said defensively, the Broncos stayed tough. Clay Koetting racked up 12 tackles and Montana Hysinger and Caleb Cobb helped with nine each. Zach Watson added eight and Bryce Hatley and Zack LaRoe added six each, while Mason turned in five tackles.
“Our guys played well up front,” Jack said.
The Broncos will continue their district schedule on the road against a tough Quanah team next Friday night, October 17, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
