The Broncos had the game against Nazareth last Friday well under hand, but senior Caleb Cobb added the icing to the 11-1 win with a three-run walk off homer in the Broncos’ final at bat.
The Broncos also got a big win over Wellington earlier in the week to go to 14-5 and 5-0 (in district) for the season. Chance Lockhart and Kade Hunsaker took the mound in the last two district games and helped their team defeat Wellington and Nazareth.
On Tuesday, Lockhart took the mound against a good Rocket team and posted 10 strikeouts in the game. He only allowed two hits in the Broncos’ 5-0 shutout win.
Clay Koetting went two for two at the plate. He doubled in the third inning and singled in the sixth. The Broncos sealed the win in the sixth and seventh when they added a run each inning. Preston Elam slammed a triple earning him an RBI by bringing Koetting home. Bryce Hatley got things moving for the Broncos in the fourth when he made good on a single.
Hunsaker got the call against Nazareth and only allowed three hits and one run while striking out six hitters.
Coach Brad Elam was pleased with the outcome.
“It was one of our better games of the year,” he said. “All phases played well.”
Defensively, Elam thought the Broncos made plays including turning two double plays with Josh Cobb and Andy Davis. Offensively, he thought the Broncos finally hit the ball they way they should.
“Bryce Hatley and Caleb Cobb, who are two and three in the order, were on base seven times, scoring six runs,” Elam said. “Hatley added a double and Cobb hit a three-run homerun to end the game by the run rule.”
Elam noted that Preston Elam also had a good day at the plate scoring two runs, stealing three bases and two hits. Chance Lockhart hit a double off the wall driving in a run and Andy Davis had an RBI hit and scored a run.
“I was very pleased with the game,” Elam said.
The Broncos will play Memphis at home on Friday, April 15, at 4:00 p.m. and will travel to Kress on Tuesday, April 19.
