The Clarendon Bronco baseball team is finding their rhythm on the diamond, as they are 9-0 in District play with just two games left at press time. They are nearly perfect overall as they have posted 16 wins, no losses, and one tie. Their latest wins came last week against Kress and Childress with Chance Lockhart on the mound. He threw for five innings and allowed only one run, two hits, while striking out five hitters.
The Broncos won 12-1 against Kress with nine of those runs coming in the third inning of play. In the rally, Lockhart, Payton Havens, and Nick Shadle all hit singles, and Josh Cobb slammed a double. The Broncos racked up seven total hits with Lockhart and Havens accounting for two hits each.
On Friday, the Broncos cleaned up on Childress, defeating them 7-3. The win was sweet for the Broncos to keep them undefeated, but they had to work hard to come from behind after trailing 0-3 after two.
“We got behind, but we were able to claw our way back and take the lead in the fourth,” head coach Brad Elam said. “(We) had key innings by Kade Hunsaker and Chance Lockhart that drove in important runs. We were able to put the ball in play and not strikeout much.”
Elam was pleased with both sides in the four-point win. “(The) pitching behind Clay Koetting and Hunsaker was great,” he said. “(Our) defense was outstanding as we turned three double plays.”
The Broncos are looking to play strong in post-season play, but have to finish their regular schedule first.
“This was an important game for us,” Elam said. “I think the last two or three games we haven’t been playing as good as we can and we needed a challenge from a team like Childress. The kids responded well.”
