Broncos’ stellar season ends in Childress

The 2017 Bronco football season ended Friday night in Childress with a 0-33 loss to Wellington.

The Broncos finished with a record of 12-2 on the year and were able to capture the Regional Finals Championship trophy on the way and reached the State Quarterfinal game for the first time since 1972.

This group of young men has played hard all year and was strengthened by a new coach with a new pride in the maroon and white. Their only two losses came at the hands of Wellington, who is now looking to defeat Muenster in the state semifinal game.

“I am extremely proud of the season these guys put together this year,” head coach Clint Conkin said. “They fougth hard in every game and never gave up. It did not go the way we wanted it to Friday, but our guys played their tails off.”

The Broncos struggled somewhat on offense and were stopped by a huge line. Daquawne Oliver had nine carries for 14 yards, and Damarjae Cortez carried seven times for 16 yards. Noab Elam had four yards from four carries, Ryan McCleskey had three carries for a yard, and Dalton Benson carried the ball twice for three yards. N. Elam threw the ball 12 times for 37 yards, and Cortez passed for 22 yards going two for six. Colt Wood was able to catch a pass for 26 yards, and Preston Elam caught two passes for 33 yards.

Conkin knows the Broncos gave it their all this season.

“Again, I am very proud of these guys,” he said. “They finished the year 12-2 and made a lot of memories that will last them a lifetime.”

Three county races to be contested

Donley County voters will have three local contested races to decide in the 2018 elections.

Filing closed Monday, December 11, with challengers declared for the offices of County/District Clerk, Precinct 3&4 Justice of the Peace, and Precinct 2 Commissioner.

Clerk Fay Vargas is seeking reelection on the Democratic ticket, and Bobby Woodard is also running for that office as a Republican. Precinct 3&4 Justice of the Peace Denise Bertrand is running again and will face Pat White in the Republican Primary. In Precinct 2, Commissioner Daniel Ford is running for re-election and is being challenged by Donley County Chief Deputy Randy Bond. That race will also be decided in the Republican primary.

The following county officials have filed for re-election but do not have any opposition: County Judge John Howard, Treasurer Wanda Smith, Precinct 1&2 Justice of the Peace Pam Mason, and Precinct 4 Commissioner Dan Sawyer.

Next year’s primary elections will be held on March 6. The General Election will be held November 6.

County enacts burn ban

The Donley County Commissioners Court enacted a burn ban during their regular meeting Monday, December 11.

No outdoor burning is allowed on a day of a forecasted Fire Weather Watch or a Red Flag Warning issued from the National Weather Service in Amarillo.

Under Donley County’s Burn Ban conditions, anyone engaging in outdoor burning must contact the Donley County Sheriff’s office prior to ignition and give the dispatcher a burn location, a contact phone number, and approximate burn time. The persons engaging in outdoor burning needs to be present on the site of the burn until the burn is completed.
Anyone engaging in any form of outdoor burning is asked to burn with extreme caution at all times.

Forecasters can issue the watch or warning for all or selected portions within a fire weather zone. The Red Flag event is verified when the weather and fuel conditions listed below are met simultaneously for any three hours or more during the period.

The following weather and fuel conditions must be forecast to occur or already occurring before issuing a Fire Weather Watch and/or Red Flag Warning: Minimum relative humidities equal to or less than 15 percent; 20 foot winds of 20 mph or higher and/or gusts to 35 mph or higher; and an NFDRS adjective fire danger rating of “high” or higher.

In other county business Monday, the commissioners court renewed the county’s tax abatement guidelines for a two-year period; approved a resolution regarding the Donley County Jail commissary account; and reappointed Jerry Woodard to the Panhandle Regional Finance Corporation Board for a three-year term.

Dorothy Eva Sims

Dorothy Eva Sims, 91, of Clarendon died Tuesday, December 5, 2017, in Childress.

Services were held Friday, December 8, 2017, in the Robertson Funeral Directors Saints’ Roost Chapel in Clarendon with Rev. Matthew Stidham, officiating. Burial will follow in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon.
Arrangements were under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.

Dorothy Sims

Dorothy was born July 24, 1926, in Hanna, Oklahoma to Albert Luther and Myrtle May Skinner. She married Billy Carl Sims on November 13, 1943, in Eufaula, Oklahoma. She had been a resident of Clarendon most of her life. She was a homemaker where she loved quilting and embroidery. She made beautiful quilts. She loved being outside and taking walks. She was a member of the First Assembly of God in Clarendon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 2 sons, Billy Charles Sims and Jackie Loyd Sims.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Mary Cole and Linda Hill and husband Kelly all of Clarendon; 2 sons, Bobby Sims and wife Petra and Ronnie Sims and wife Terri all of Clarendon; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

Dikki Poe Howell

Dikki Poe Howell, 93, of Clarendon died Saturday, December 9, 2017, in McLean.

Family Only Graveside Services will be held at a later date in Llano Cemetery in Amarillo with Chris Moore, officiating.
Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.

Dikki Poe Howell

Dikki was born November 20, 1924, in Abilene, Texas to John C. and Lizzie Poe. She married Dr. James Frank Howell, Jr. on February 4, 1950, in Fort Worth. Dikki had grew up in the Waco Children’s Home with her siblings from when she was 5 years old. While living in Abilene, Dikki had served as Executive Secretary to Mrs. Baird and was instrumental in getting Mrs. Baird’s Bread in the Panhandle of Texas. In 1977, she moved to Clarendon and was very active in the community, serving on the Donley Co. Hospital District Board, had been a member of the 1910 Book Club at the Patching Memorial Club House, and had also a member of the Dental Society of Amarillo. Dikki graduated from McMurry University, and later on in her life, she took many geology courses at West Texas State University. She was a licensed farrier, enjoyed knitting, painting, and also practiced Judo. Mrs. Howell was a Catholic.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on June 22, 2007; a son, Zack Howell in 1973; 4 brothers, Joe, Bert, Pat and Frank Poe; and by 3 sisters, Elizabeth, Emily, and Mazelle Poe.

She is survived by 4 sons; James Howell, III and wife Leanne of Midland, Tim Howell and wife Teresa of Wildorado, Joe Howell and wife Rhonda of Clarendon, Pete Howell and wife Vonna of Amarillo; her daughter, Tessie Robinson and husband Jim of Clarendon; her grandchildren, Felicia Powell and husband Jeremy, Zack Robinson and wife Jennifer, Lindsey Robertson, Stephanie Miller and husband Rick, Pete Howell, Jr and wife Megan, Zack Howell and wife Sheri; 9 great grandchildren, Emeri and Kreed Robinson, Jaxon Robertson, Matthew, Jacob, Emmett, Samantha Howell, and Aubrey and Noah Miller; and dear friend Lois Tilley of Ft. Worth.

Broncos win Regional Championship

Clarendon’s Noab Elam has been handing off the football to a great backfield all season, but last Friday night at Frenship High Elam threw with success and posted 281 total yards in the air making good on 7 of 14 passes for four touchdowns.

The win puts the Broncos in a battle against the Skyrockets of Wellington one more time this year Friday, December 8, in Childress at 7:00 p.m. in the State Quarterfinal game. Admission for Friday’s game in Childress is $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Friday’s game will be Clarendon’s first appearance at the state quarterfinal game since 1972.

All of the Broncos’ touchdowns last week and one two-point conversion came from Elam’s arm to three different players. Preston Elam was on the receiving side in the first quarter when he grabbed a 62-yard pass from his brother. Damarjae Cortez ran in for the bonus.

Colt Wood turned up the heat in the second quarter when he nabbed a 76-yard pass from Elam, and Cortez took it in for two. It was Wood again in the fourth quarter for 39 yards and Cortez to seal the win on a 70-yard pass from Elam. P. Elam caught the conversion pass for two.

“Our kids played great, and I am extremely proud of these guys,” head coach Clint Conkin said. “They just keep fighting and finding ways to win ball games.”

Wood caught three passes for 133 yards, P. Elam also caught three for 105 yards, and Cortez had one big pass from Elam for 70 yards. Clarendon had 68 yards rushing in the game.

“On offense our rushing attack was slowed down by Hamlin’s great defensive front, but our passing attack was great,” Conkin said.

Defensively, Caton Grahn and Dalton Benson were unstoppable. Grahn had 15 tackles and four quarterback sacks, and Benson followed suit with 13 tackles and two sacks. Justin Christopher racked up nine tackles and two sacks, and Cortez had seven tackles. Wood had five tackles with one interception, and Daquawne Oliver had five tackles and one sack. Clayton White had four tackles and one sack, and Andy Davis had four tackles and one sack. Zack Caison had thee tackles and also one sack.

“Our defense played great once again and swarmed them all night long,” Conkin said. “We had several guys with tackles.

A Pep Rally is scheduled for 3 p.m. this Friday in the Bronco Gym.

City picks Knorpp for Greenbelt board

The Clarendon City Council appointed Walt Knorpp as its representative for the Greenbelt Water Authority board during a called session last Tuesday, November 28.

City Administrator David Dockery said aldermen interviewed two candidates for the job – Knorpp and Jack Moreman.

“The council was greatly impressed with both candidates,” Dockery said. “Either would have been an exceptional choice. Mr. Knorpp was selected due to the fact that he had previously served on the Greenbelt board and was knowledgeable about past activities.”

Dockery said Knorpp had served as the city’s Greenbelt representative for several years in the 1990s. He will take the position beginning with Greenbelt’s December meeting.

“The council expressed its gratitude to Gary Campbell for his seven years of service on the Greenbelt Board and his willingness to assist the city in the future,” Dockery said.

Frankie Gene McKinney

Frankie Gene McKinney, 74, of Clarendon died Saturday, December 2, 2017, in McLean.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 7, 2017, in the First Assembly of God Church in Clarendon with Rev. Matthew Stidham, officiating. Burial will follow in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.

Frankie was born December 13, 1942, in Clarendon to Charles James and Mable Louise Mills McKinney. He married Shirley Ruth Johnson in November 1965 in Clarendon. He had been a resident of Clarendon most of his life and was a member of the First Assembly of God in Clarendon. He loved his family, his dog Tuffy, and was a hard worker.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Shirley on October 22, 2006; 2 daughters, Emma and Shelly McKinney; a brother, James McKinney; 2 sisters, Betty Jo Cannon and Mary Davis.

He is survived by his son, Chris McKinney of Clarendon; and several nieces and nephews.
