The Broncos were devastated last Friday night at Randall High when New Deal threw up a Hail Mary with just ticks on the clock to steal the win away from the maroon and white. A hard-fought battle ended at 68-69 with New Deal grabbing the Area trophy away from the Broncos.
Earlier in the week, Clarendon clinched the Bi-District title with a 49-36 win over West Texas High in Pampa on Tuesday.
On Friday, the Broncos grabbed the tip and settled into a rhythm early on, but the Lions came back to only trail by two points after the first eight minutes. The game went back and forth with both teams trying to find their comfort zone.
After a 39-39 tie at the break, New Deal came out and made a statement in the third. However, Clarendon did not back down and worked their way back to the lead with in the final period of play. With just 1.2 seconds left on the clock, New Deal got the ball to Blaylock who turned, shot and made
good on a three-point bank shot to earn the win.
Clarendon was off somewhat in their attempts at the bonus line where they shot 50 percent. New Deal was able to post 54 percent from the free throw line. The majority of New Deal’s points came from two players who put in 24 and 31 points.
Senior Bear Smith led the Broncos with 22 points that included two three-pointers and hitting six for nine from the bonus. Donovan Thompson finished with 17, and Jamal Butler helped with 16. Collin Butler put in eight, Caton Grahn had four, and Dalton Benson had one.
Coach Clint Conkin was proud of the effort the Broncos gave in the game.
“I thought our kids played hard all year and fought until the end,” Conkin said.
Bear Smith, Caton Grahn, and Isaac Dunham have been a crucial part of the Broncos’ success in the past and will be missed next year.
