Clara Jo was born September 9, 1947, in Wellington to Clarence and Callie Jo Stephens. She spent her early childhood in Pampa before moving to Hedley, where she graduated high school in 1966. Clara Jo was known for her beauty, her sarcastic sense of humor, and most notably her infectious smile. She was loving, humble and kind. Even though she suffered from a lifelong physical disability, she never complained.
In addition to being a mother, she was a cosmetologist and owned her own video game arcade called Clara’s Corner, where a whole generation of Hedley kids grew up frequenting. She was a great seamstress, loved Dachshunds, and was known for never missing her kids basketball games or events. She could always be found on the front row, but even if you couldn’t see her, you could hear her booming voice above the crowd cheering. She had a way of making every holiday special, because she was happiest when surrounded by her family. Clara Jo’s grandkids all have memories of her standing at the stove making her world famous chocolate gravy, which they requested at every gathering. She was the closest thing to perfect that a mother and Nanna could ever be.
She is preceded in death by her father, Clarence Omar Stephens, and mother, Callie Jo Stephens.
She is survived by Gary Calhoun of Lubbock, her 5 children, Stephanie Molloy and husband Mark of Amarillo, Calvin Holland and wife Leanne of Hedley, Scheli Moore and husband Michael of Canyon, Tanya Burton and husband Blain of Hedley, and Rhett Holland and wife Berkley of Amarillo, 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and another due in March.
In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be made to Rowe Cemetery in Hedley or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
