Students, faculty, and staff from Clarendon College participated in a service day to benefit the Clarendon community on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
Morning classes for CC were suspended to make way for a UIL competition; and in turn, the college hosted a day of community service. There were 194 students, faculty, and staff who volunteered to undertake several projects throughout Clarendon.
- Some of the projects included:
- Adopt-a-Highway, where roadside cleanup along a two-mile stretch of State Highway 70 was completed.
- Cleanup of Citizen’s Cemetery.
- Worked with members of the Clarendon Lions Club to prepare US flags for proper retirement by our local Cub Scouts.
- Helped with the Donley County Senior Citizens Center to prepare vehicles for home delivery of meals.
- Cleanup of the train tracks area behind Lowe’s, Western Skies Motel, Dollar General, Pizza Hut, Sonic, and Best Western Plus Red River Inn.
- Cleanup of the CC welding center on First Street.
- Shrub removal and cleanup of flowerbeds on the Clarendon College campus.
- Painted bulldog paw prints along College Drive.
“I’m very proud of our students, staff, and faculty for taking a day to give volunteer service to the Clarendon community,” CC President Tex Buckhaults said. “It’s an excellent mark of citizenship to be of service to the community, and Clarendon College wants to show that mark of excellence. We are thankful for the support of the Clarendon community, and this is a nice way to give back to show our thankfulness.”
Ken McIntosh, who headed up the Adopt-a-Highway effort stated, this was a good thing for both the college and the community because it allows the college to show, and the community to see, that we care.
Kamrynn Patterson, a student from Kim, Colorado, stated that she volunteered for the service day because she was raised to believe in the value of community service through 4H and wanted to continue showing those values here in Clarendon.
There are plans to make a service day an annual event.
