Odell Christie Moore, age 83, died Friday, March 16, 2012, in Clarendon.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 21, 2012, in Robertson Funeral Directors Saints’ Roost Chapel with the Rev. Lance Wood and Ernie Christie officiating.
Private family burial was held at Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon with arrangements by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.
Odell was born March 4, 1929, on the Christie Family farm in Windy Valley, Donley County, to Emmett Magee Christie and Oma Viola Miller Christie. She was the seventh of nine children. The family eventually moved to McLean where she graduated from High School and worked as a switchboard operator for the telephone company. Odell married L.D. Moore from Hedley on December 31, 1948. They made their home near Hedley and farmed there until 1966.
Odell started working for General Telephone Co. in Memphis in 1959 as a switchboard operator and commuted to work until L.D. retired from farming in 1966 when they moved to Memphis. Odell retired in 1993, and they moved to Clarendon. They attended the First Baptist Church in Clarendon where she was also known as the “Brownie Lady.” She loved to sew and research family genealogy. She was an avid gardener and loved working in her yard as well as collecting books and recipes. She and L.D. also enjoyed collecting antiques and cowboy memorabilia. She was “Grandell” to her grandchildren and adored all of them. In 2009, she welcomed the 5th generation to her family with the birth of her great great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2000; five brothers; and three sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Lura Helms and husband Larry of Clarendon; Two grandchildren, Karen Williams and Christie Cruse and husband Chancy all of Clarendon; four great grandchildren, Beth Newman and husband Junior, Jesse Foster, Zane Cruse, and Skylar Williams all of Clarendon; and a great great grandson, Hagen Newman of Clarendon.
The family requests memorials to be sent to Donley County Senior Citizens or Clarendon Volunteer Fire Dept.
