Lady Broncos remain undefeated in District

The Lady Broncos gained two huge district wins last week to remain on top of the their District after finishing the first of their district schedule. They cruised to an 84-42 win over White Deer at home last Tuesday night.

The Lady Broncos jumped all over White Deer in the first half of play and stopped everything the Lady Does tried. After three quarters the ladies led by 33 points and they were able to maintain their lead to the buzzer.

The ladies shot 74 percent from the free throw line, which kept their offense strong. Five players finished in double figures with Ryann Starnes leading the way with 18. McKayla Cartwright had 16, Jentry Shadle put in 15, Deborah Howard added 11, and Taylor Gaines stayed strong with 10.

“We shot the ball great against White Deer as a team,” coach Molly Weatherred said. “We had a lot of girls step up and so good things. We had five girls in double figures. If we can continue to have that many girls contribute we are going to be hard to guard.”

Also scoring: Lydia Howard 5, Maci White 5, Jency Burton 2, and Audrey Shelton 2.

On Friday, the Lady Broncos traveled to Panhandle and they won 47-37 in overtime. The Lady Broncos trailed the Pantherettes by six in the opening quarter, but cut that lead to only trail by two at the break. After holding onto the lead into the final minutes, the Lady Broncos relinquished their lead and Panhandle tied the ball game at 36 to send it to overtime. Not to be denied, the Lady Broncos took control of the three-minute period and outscored their opponent by 10 points to grab the win and stay undefeated in District play.

“(Panhandle) had a good game plan against us,” Weatherred said. “We didn’t shoot the ball as good as we wanted. It is a hard place to play, so we’re glad we got out with a win.”

The Lady Broncos will take on Claude on the road on Friday night and play Vega at home Tuesday, January 29.
