Of the 15 Clarendon High School students who placed in their respective district UIL academic contests at Amarillo College last Friday, seven will advance to the Regional event. In order to advance, students must place first through third.
Seniors advancing are Zack Cornell – 1st Ready Writing, 1st Editorials, 3rd Headlines; Deborah Howard – 1st Features (also placed 4th Editorials); Tyler Smith – 2nd Editorials; Darbe Woodard – 1st Chemistry (also placed 5th Science); and Haley Ferguson – 1st Computer Applications. Also advancing are sophomore Caleb Cobb – 1st Social Studies and 3rd Current Issues and Events and junior Cedrick McCampbell – 3rd Science.
Others who placed to help the school rank 3rd overall district are seniors Minnie Buckhaults – 5th Features and 6th Ready Writing, Jacy Hill – 5th News, and Savannah Topper – 6th Informative Speaking.
Juniors who placed include Abby Johnson – 4th Spelling, and Taylor Overstreet – 6th Poetry; sophomore Emilie Thompson – 6th Literary Criticism; and freshmen Riley Shadle – 5th Number Sense and Sarah Williams – 4th Lincoln Douglass Debate.
The Journalism team of Cornell, Howard, Smith, Buckhaults, and Hill won 1st place. Two teams came in second: Science consisting of Woodard, McCampbell, and senior Audra Thomas. Also coming 2nd in team competition was Social Studies consisting of Cobb, junior Lee Buckhaults and sophomore Cooper Bilbrey.
“Our students consistently show their commitment to this competitive, extracurricular academic program,” said Diane Skelton, UIL coordinator and writing/journalism sponsor. “We sponsors are proud of all 31 students who participated that day.”
South Plains College in Levelland will host the Regional meet May 2.
