The Clarendon Broncos are putting it all together in their 2014-1015 basketball season with opening wins over Fritch and Highland Park at home. The Broncos beat Fritch at 74-51 in their season opener.
The Broncos totally frustrated their opponent, as they played solid on both ends of the court. The Broncos took control early as they held the Eagles to only two points in the first quarter of play. They continued their dominance throughout until the buzzer. Chance Lockhart had five assists and Bryce Grahn had four. Lockhart was also the top rebounder and Cedrick McCampbell, Grahn, and Chesson Sims added seven rebounds. Grahn and Charles Mason each had four steals, which gave the Broncos the edge in the game.
Coach Brandt Lockhart was pleased with his team’s win.
“We did a good job of moving the basketball,” Lockhart said. “It was a good first game for us. We still need to get better in all areas. I was pleased with our effort.”
Mason was hitting on all cylinders as he led the Broncos on the scoreboard with 19 points. McCampbell and Lockhart helped with 13 and 11 respectively. Junior Ceniceros had nine, Sims had eight, Grahn and Riley Shadle added six, and Colt Wood put in two.
On Friday, the Broncos played a strong Highland Park team and took them down 64-43. The Broncos continued their domineering play and aggressiveness to get the big win. They lead from the tip off scoring 18 points in the second quarter of play to set the precedent for the remainder of the game.
“We did a great job of playing defense,” Lockhart said. “Charles Mason and Riley Shadle did a great job of shutting down one of the top 3A guards in the area. We did a great job shooting the basketball, and we shot 9 of 19 from three point land.”
Lockhart noted that Grahn had seven assists and Lockhart had four. Lockhart was the top rebounder once again with nine and McCampbell followed suit with six. Mason, Grahn, and Lockhart came up with two steals each. Lockhart also led the Broncos with 16 points and Ceniceros turned in 14. Mason had eight, Shadle had seven, and McCampbell, Grahn, and Sims had five points each. Wood and Taylon Knorpp added two.
The Broncos travel to River Road December 2, to take on the Wildcats at 8 p.m. and will play in the Claude Tournament December 4-6 with times to be announced.
