Funeral services for Martin Cleon Byrd, age 93, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2005, in the Claude Cemetery with Rev. Janet Edwards, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Claude, officiating. Burial was held in Claude Cemetery under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc., of Clarendon.
Mr. Byrd died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, in Claude. He was born July 8, 1911, in Claude and was a lifetime resident of Armstrong County. He married Doris Aldridge on October 26, 1935, in Claude. He had been a farmer and rancher most of his life. At various times over the years, he had served on the Claude School Board, the Armstrong County ASCS Committee, as the County Democratic Chairman, and on various other committees and boards. He was a winning pitcher on a semi-pro baseball team during the 1930s. He enjoyed checkers and dominos, working with his land and cattle, and was a devoted husband, dad, and grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife on December 19, 2001, and by a son, Martin Cleon Byrd II in 1987.
Survivors include one son, Bob Byrd and wife Sharon of Canyon; two daughters, Jo Ann Byrd Miller and husband Jerry of Oakton, Virginia, and Sarah Beth Byrd Fox and husband Denton of Richardson, Texas; eight grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be to the First United Methodist Church in Claude or a favorite charity.
