Ann Levell Cargill Davis McGuire

Ann Levell Cargill Davis McGuire died on Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at her home in Alpine surrounded by her family and friends.  She was 65.

Ann was born near Rochester, Texas, on December 16, 1939, to Eddie and Ollie Cargill.  Her father, Eddie, a farmer, was also a WWI veteran who adopted the middle name of “Armistice” upon returning home from WWI.  Ann’s mother, Ollie, died the day after Ann was born due to complications following childbirth.  Eddie was unable to care for newborn Ann, so she was raised by Mary Josephine (Josey) Cargill Davis (grandmother) and Fred Inglehardt Davis (uncle) in Rochester, where she graduated from high school in 1958.  Ann was a cheerleader for the Rochester Steers, enjoyed home economics classes, and was active in all social activities.

Ann attended Abilene Christian College and Hardin-Simmons University and earned a Cosmetologists License from the Abilene Beauty College in 1959.  She was married on April 11, 1959 to Douglas Allen McGuire of Rochester.

Ann retired from Sul Ross State University (SRSU) in 2001, after working more than a total of fourteen years for the university Physical Plant and the Wildenthal Memorial Library.  Prior to joining SRSU she worked as a cosmetologist in Abilene until her husband graduated from Hardin-Simmons; County Tax Assessor Collector Assistant for Runnels County Tax Office in Ballinger; secretary and bookkeeper for Wallace Monument Company in Clarendon; and receptionist for Dr. Thomas Coats in Alpine.

Ann is survived by her husband of over 46 years, Douglas Allen McGuire; her two sons Mickey Douglas McGuire and wife Pamela Gomez McGuire of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Bradford Rhea McGuire and wife Karen Roach McGuire of Alpine, Texas; and her sister Wanda Gayle Powers of Pampa, Texas.  She has ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Ann loved working on craft projects, collecting cookbooks, researching the family history, and putting together family scrapbooks. Her faith and love of the Lord sustained her throughout her life.  She was a supporter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and former President and Gold Star member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.  A celebration of life is planned at the American Legion Hall in Alpine on Saturday, September 3, 2005, at 6 p.m. All family and friends are invited to attend.

Ann was preceded in death by her grandmother, uncle, mother, father, three sisters and three brothers.

The family encourages everyone to be an organ donor, because Ann was a lung transplant recipient, and asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society (PO Box 1140, Alpine, TX 79831), Michael’s Mountain Ministry (PO Box 822, Alpine, TX 79831), or the American Legion, Post 79, Big Bend Unit.
