Funeral services for Velma Dean Stephenson, age 85, were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2004, in the First United Methodist Church in Claude with Rev. Don Travis, Retired Methodist Minister and Rev. Janet Edwards, Pastor, officiating. Burial was held in Claude Cemetery under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc., of Clarendon.
Mrs. Stephenson died Sunday, January 11, 2004, in Claude. She was born October 31, 1918 in Itasca, Hill Country, Texas, and married C. Carey Stephenson in 1947 at Waco. They moved to Claude that same year and resided in Claude until moving to Amarillo a short time ago. She was a long time member of the Home Demonstration Club and the 55 Plus Club. She was also a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Claude and was a former youth director and involved in the United Methodist Women for many years. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by a grandson-in-law, Chad Smith; and a great grandson, Collin Allen.
Survivors include her husband, Carey Stephenson of Amarillo; two daughters, Linda Jacquez of Clovis, New Mexico, and Louise Moore and husband Jack of Amarillo; two sons, Dee Herring and wife Pat of Amarillo and David Stephenson and wife Rhonda of Canyon; one brother, Charles Farrell and wife Janelle of Cleburne, Texas; twelve grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.
Casket bearers were Tyler Moore, Tony Hanke, Aaron Moore, Steve Burton, Lonny Poe, Monty Craig, Cash McKinney, Larry Jacquez, Jay Bertsch, Jeff Stephenson, and Tyson Allen.
The family suggests that memorials be to BSA Hospice, PO Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176-0950 or to the First United Methodist Church in Claude.
