Funeral services for Mattie Elizabeth Rhodes Chamberlain, age 94, were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in the Robertson Chapel of Memories with Rev. James Ivey Edwards, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Clarendon, officiating. Burial was held in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc.
Mrs. Chamberlain died Sunday, July 13, 2003, in Carrollton, Texas. She was born December 13, 1908, in Stamford, Texas. She was a former resident of Claude and then Amarillo before moving to Carrollton three years ago. She married Benjamin Emory Chamberlain on May 20, 1944, in Amarillo. He preceded her in death on October 4, 1976. She attended West Texas Teachers College, now WTAMU, and taught school for several years in Ashtola, Chamberlain, and then in Claude. She had worked in the Armstrong County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office and for the Armstrong County Agent for several years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Claude and had previously served as church secretary for several years.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Benese Scherrer of Boulder City, Nevada; and Prarie Counce of Carrollton; seven sisters, Jewell Stewart of Amarillo; Irene Jones of Amarillo; Ailene McElroy of Clarendon; Ruth Riley of Dewey, Arizona; Johnnie Adamson of Bakersfield, California; Dorothy Adamson of Dewey, Arizona; and Betty McElroy of Amarillo; and four grandchildren.
