Five Hedley UIL Academic Teams represented their school at the district meet at Frank Phillips College March 28, and all five won district championships and placed in the top individuals in their respective competitions.
Seniors led the way in several events as Danielle Smith won the gold medal in both Number Sense and Mathematics, and Jonathan Edmonson won overall Science, Chemistry, and Physics first place medals. Sam Lovely was first in Biology and second in overall Science, and Kristen Dwight was third in overall Science.
The juniors did well also as Skyler Conatser (gold), Amber Burnam (silver), and Elizabeth Garcia (fourth) led the Calculator Applications team to their second straight district crown.
Dylan Pettit, a sophomore, advanced to the regional competition in three events, tying for first in Number Sense and placing fourth in Science and Mathematics to help win district titles.
In Social Studies, younger students led the way to a first place finish. Sophomore Marlee Sargent placed first overall, and freshman Jasie Sargent firsined second overall. Freshman Reid Copelin placed fifth. Britenie Saitta rounded out the score for Hedley by placing fourth in Informative Speaking.
Hedley will take 14 students to the regional competition at South Plains College in Levelland on April 11. Their sponsors are excited about their teams’ progress.
