A memorial service was held for Jose E. (Hippy Joe) Jaramillo Jr. on Saturday, 16 March 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clarendon, TX. The service was conducted by Father Arokia Raj Samala.
“Hippy” Jose E. Jaramillo Jr. was born February 5, 1951 in Lourdes, New Mexico to Epifanio and Guadalupe Jaramillo. Around the time that Joe was about 10-11 years old, the family moved to Texas, settling in Lelia Lake. As he was growing up, Joe’s first job was picking cotton.
As he grew older, he began to work at other jobs, such as hoeing cotton, picking vegetables, and hauling hay. He was soon working along with his dad, working for a contractor mowing grass for the state of Texas. He soon moved on and began working at the Paymaster Gin in Lelia Lake, working the press. After which, he worked for Vince David as a roofer for a couple of years. He then worked for Milton David Roofing for about fifteen years. Joe was always working and always working hard.
Joe was diagnosed with colon cancer about four years ago and wasn’t able to work. However, Joe continued to stay busy by working with beads, making necklaces and bracelets. This terrible illness took its toll on Joe’s health, but he continued to fight until the very end on January 27, 2013. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his mother Guadalupe Jaramillo in 1978 and his father, Epifanio Jaramillo in 1989.
He is survived by Faye Sanchez of Lelia Lake, Charlie Jaramillo of Hedley, Elias Jaramillo of Lelia Lake, Cleofes Jaramillo of Lelia Lake, Gloria Jaramillo of Lelia Lake, Angie Lucero of Howardwick, Mary Jaramillo of Lelia Lake, Robert Jaramillo of Hedley, Theresa David of Pampa, and Tony Jaramillo of Lusby, Maryland.
