Clarendon’s Bryce Grahn and Pampa’s Hannah Fansler were the top men’s and women’s finishers of the fourth annual Chance Mark Jones Roar ‘N Run 5K last Saturday, April 9, at Clarendon College.
The race sponsored by the Clarendon Lions Club in conjunction with National Child Abuse Awareness Month, drew 127 registrations and had 107 actual runners and walkers the day of the event as well as dozens of spectators, supporters, and workers.
The annual 5K is held to raise awareness of child abuse and to honor the life of four-year-old Chance Mark Jones.
Grahn, finishing with a time of 19:37, had the best overall time, the best men’s time, and best time for those ages 11 to 19. He also finished 1:25 earlier than last year’s best runner. Fansler ran the race in 25 minutes and 20 seconds, coming in first among all women and second in the 11-19 age group. Grahn is 17, and Fansler is 11.
One of the standouts of this year’s race was Mary Kaplan, age 77, from Sunrise Beach, Texas. Kaplan is pursuing the goal of running a 5K in every county in Texas, and she won her age category Saturday..

Proceeds from the annual Chance Mark Jones Roar ‘N Run support the charitable community activities of the Clarendon Lions Club, including eyeglasses for local school kids, Christmas food baskets for local families, continued park improvements, and hosting the area office of The Bridge – Children’s Advocacy Center.
