Clarendon Merchants say shopping at home can pay off big, and they’re putting up $200 in merchant bucks this Thursday during Late Night Shopping.

Three lucky people will get the chance to spin Santa’s Wheel for a chance at the jackpot.

You must be present to win, and details will be available at participating merchants.

Santa Claus is also scheduled to be downtown this Thursday night.

The ladies of Guys & Dolls Salon have relocated after an accidental fire burned out their downtown shop Saturday morning. Two neighboring buildings suffered smoke damage from the blaze.

Zan Adams discovered the fire at the  shop while driving north on Kearney Street shortly after 5:30 a.m.

“I had just dropped my daughter off at my in-laws and was driving to work when I saw smoke coming out of the front of the building,” Adams said.

She couldn’t see any flames but went straight to the Donley County Sheriff’s Office where she reported the fire.

The Clarendon Volunteer Fire Department responded with four trucks and had the blaze extinguished by 7 a.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Pat Robertson. Two fire department officers and one EMS unit also responded.

“The guys did a good job and used very little water to put out the fire,” Robertson said. “It didn’t take long. The interior was almost a total loss, but the building was still structurally sound.”

The fire department remained on the scene until 8 a.m. and worked to remove smoke from the buildings on either side of the beauty shop. The Rebekah Lodge to the south had minimal smoke damage, but the Newhouse Building on the north had greater smoke damage.

Robertson said the fire started in a linen hamper on the west wall of the beauty shop. Fire damage was limited to the northwest part of the building, but the remainder of the shop suffered heavy heat and smoke damage. Heat also cracked glass in the front of the building.

An estimate of the damage was not available as of Monday.

Shop owner Brenda Chamberlain said she appreciates the efforts of the men who fought the blaze.

“I’m so grateful to the fire department for their quick action and their risk of life,” she said. “They saved all of us on that end of the block.”

Chamberlain has owned Guys & Dolls for 21 years and works there with Ethie Uptergrove, Frieda Siddle, and Carol Baxter. She said she intends to reopen her business in the same location.

“I have too much clientele to just quit,” she said. “My phone has been ringing off the wall with well wishers.”

Uptergrove and Siddle were able to conduct their business Saturday thanks to Janie Finch of Janie’s Beauty Shop, located in the Rebekah Lodge building.

Chamberlain said all four of the Guys & Dolls gang will be relocating temporarily to Susie Q’s Family Hair Care at 103 S. Kearney until they can get back in order

“Susie was gracious enough to let us all stay together,” she said.

Chamberlain was also very thankful for the efforts of Zan Adams.

“She saw the smoke. I’m forever grateful to her, and I don’t even know her.”

“I’m glad I got to help,” Adams said. “That makes me feel good, and I’m glad nobody was hurt. Things can be replaced; lives can’t.”

The Clarendon Lions Club will increase its support of the Texas Lions Camp following their Tuesday meeting.

The club heard a program from Lion Jack King of the Amarillo Downtown Lions Club, who discussed the camp, and met his challenge to become a 100% Club by contributing $10 per member to the camp.

Located in Kerrville, the Texas Lions Camp caters to children with any kind of physical disabilities ranging from missing limbs to asthma.

“They [the camp personnel] grab those kids physically, mentally, and every other way to show them the biggest time of their lives,” King said, who is a director for the camp.

He said the camp was established by the Lions 52 years ago for kids who were battling the debilitating effects of polio. Today the camp has programs for crippled children as well as kids with diabetes, respiratory problems, hearing loss, or impaired vision.

Some of the programs include a minature golf course, horseback riding, and swimming. In addition to the fun activities, the camp teaches life skills such as helping diabetic children learn to care for themselves and even how to give themselves insulin injections.

King told a story of boy who had no arms and legs and went to the camp. His favorite activity was horseback riding.

“Everything is set up for these kids, and everything is accessible to them.”

The swimming pool even has a ramp going into it. Wheelchair bound kids can drive their chair into the pool until they just float out of it, he said.

The camp raises the children’s self-esteem and praises them for their accomplishments – sometimes for the first time in their lives.

King said many times the hardest part of getting kids into the camp is just convincing the parents to let them go. Some of the kids have never been away from home.

The members of the Clarendon Lions Club, like all Texas Lions clubs, support the camp with their a portion of their regular dues. Tuesday’s action by the club was an additional donation to the camp.

The Texas Lions Camp is open to children ages seven to 17, and the Clarendon Lions hope to see some local child or children attend the camp. For more information, contact Boss Lion Stan Leffew at 874-3584.

Texas Panhandle Mental Health Mental Retardation (TPMHMR) will be holding a public forum on Monday, December 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the Burton Memorial Library in the Meeting Room, located at 217 S. Kearney in Clarendon.

The purpose of this public forum is to inform community members of the services currently being offered by the agency, as well as to gather feedback regarding satisfaction with these services and to address any unmet needs identified by the residents of Armstrong, Collingsworth, Donley, and Hall Counties.

Texas Panhandle Mental Health Authority merged with Amarillo State Center on September 1, 2000, resulting in the newly formed Texas Panhandle Mental Health Mental Retardation.  Residents of Armstrong, Collingsworth, Donley, and Hall Counties are served by a regional satellite office that offers mental health services, as well as the Wellington workshop, which provides services to individuals with mental retardation.

The local outpatient psychiatric clinic offers mental health services to adults who suffer from severe mental health illness and to children and adolescents in need of mental health intervention.  This clinic has helped to stabilize the emotional and behavorial functioning of people with severe mental illness, reducing homelessness, harmful behavior, court commitments, and hospitalizations that are costly to the community.

Services in the Wellington Workshop include vocational training at the workshop and job coaching in community jobs.  Support is also provided in the area of nursing, psychology, and service coordination.  All of the above services listed aid in building self-esteem and improving the quality of lives for individuals with mental retardation.

Texas Panhandle Mental Health Mental Retardation would like to encourage all citizens with an interest in the issues of mental health and mental retardation to attend this forum, which is expected to last approximately one hour.  The mission of TPMHMR is “To respond to the diverse needs of all persons with mental illness and mental retardation by creating an accessible system of services which supports individuals choices and results in lives of dignity and independence.”

AUSTIN — Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs today applauded increased funding allocated in an agricultural appropriations conference report to aid states, including Texas, in boll weevil eradication efforts.

The conference report, which provides for $79.157 million for the federal government’s share of boll weevil eradication to states with active eradication zones, is expected to be signed and finalized by the president within days.

“This additional funding will provide a tremendous boost to Texas’ boll weevil eradication efforts,” Combs said.

“Under this bill, Texas’ existing eradication zones can expect to receive about $25 million total. An additional $4 million would be provided by the federal government if producers in the proposed Southern High Plains/Caprock Zone vote in November to establish an eradication program in their eight-county area covering 1.29 million acres.”

The weevil causes an estimated $50 million in crop losses and crop protection treatments each year in our state, Combs said.

In September, Combs declared the 10 counties in the Southern Rolling Plains Zone near San Angelo to be functionally eradicated of boll weevils. The declaration was a historic milestone for the state and farmers.

Cotton is Texas’ top cash crop, earning $1.2 billion in 1999 in cash receipts with 30 percent of the U.S. cotton grown in the Lone Star State.

Increasing enrollment and additional classes are pushing Hedley ISD to build more classrooms, according to School Superintendent Bryan Hill.

The Hedley Board of Trustees accepted a bid of Redi-Built Metal Products & Construction for a 30x70x10 steel building with a 4” concrete slab, 3” Fiberglas insulation, six doors, four windows, and all the trim for $24,150 when they met in a regular session November 20.

A bid was also accepted from the same company for a 10×70 awning and four-inch thick sidewalks for $2,800.

“The crew should start setting up forms for the concrete this week, and we hope to be finished by March 1, 2001,” Hill said.

The new building will include space for a sixth grade classroom, bathrooms, and a new science lab. It will be constructed on the north side of the HISD campus.

Hedley’s enrollment is currently at 174 students. Hill said that is up 60 students from six years ago. He says the two new rooms will just meet the school’s basic needs.

“We’ve been pretty crowded for the last few years,” Hill said. “Every classroom is full, and you can’t get in to clean them. We have four or five teachers floating around from period to period, and we’ve added an ESL [English as a Second Language] program. We need these two rooms just to get by.”

Hill said the school would really also like to add a new computer lab as well as a bigger library or a combination library/auditorium.

In other school business, the itinerary for the senior class trip to was presented and approved. The seniors will be taking a cruise from Galveston to Mexico, and the school pickup and van will be used for transportation to Galveston.

The 1999-2000 audit was approved as presented by Bill Baker. Achievement awards were approved for the staff of Hedley CISD, and Principal Terry Stevens presented the Safe and Drug Free School report.

The board voted in favor of changing the regular board meeting scheduled for Monday, December 18, to Tuesday, December 19, at 8 p.m.

Bridget Christopherson was hired as a teacher aide.

Two science lab tables and one teacher’s demonstration table/desk were also purchased.

The inter-local agreement for Shared Services Arrangement with EPSSA was also approved, and Superintendent Bryan Hill gave an administrative report on the Technology Conference.

Students entering Clarendon High School next fall will be met with a more stringent set of graduation requirements.

The Clarendon ISD Board of Trustees approved an additional year of math and science to the local requirements when they met in regular session November 26.

Next year’s freshmen will have to take a minimum of three years of math and science classes. Previous requirements only called for two years in each subject.

“We just want to help prepare our kids for college,” said CHS Principal Larry Jeffers. “Even if they choose not to go to college, that extra math will always help them.”

Jeffers said the school will start offering two new courses in math and science. Practical Applications of Algebra will focus on life-long math skills, and students will have the option of taking Geology-Meteorology-Oceanography (GMO) for a science credit.

In addition to helping the students, Jeffers said the school hopes the changes will prepare this year’s eighth graders for the TAAS-2 test their junior year. TAAS-2 will raise the bar for Texas students’ minimum skills.

The trustees also approved making the state’s recommended high school graduation plan the local district default plan. The basic difference will be requirements for taking two years of foreign language and one year of fine arts.

Students will still have different options, Jeffers said, but they will have to make a choice to go the easier route. Parents will also have to sign off on taking minimal requirements.

“We want the parents to be more proactive in choosing the graduation plan,” he said.

School officials say they believe the state will mandate that districts adopt the new requirements in the future.

Currently, about a third of CHS students take only the minimum requirements for graduation. More than 50 percent take the “recommended” requirements, and the remainder go an advanced route.

In other school business, a public hearing and discussion was conducted concerning the district’s AEIS Report for 1999-2000, Campus Performance Objectives & Actual Performance, and Violent, Criminal Incidents and Prevention, and Safety Policies.

A bid was accepted from A-1 Audio to upgrade the existing intercom system in the elementary building for $7,489.76.

The board approved the purchase and installation of a commercial stainless steel vent hood and electric grill for the Bronco Gym concession stand for $6,386 from the Activity Fund.

A motion was approved to designate $400,000 of the general fund balance for future construction, renovation, and repairs as presented.

The board accepted the resignation of the Bridget Christopherson and agreed to hire JoDawn Gifford as an at-will employee.

The Panhandle Regional 911 Network will be notifying rural Donley County residents of their 911 or physical address this week.

City type addresses consisting of street names and numbers will be assigned to homes and businesses in rural areas. Citizens living within an incorporated area will not be affected.

The project is a combined effort of the Donley County Commissioners’ Court, the Donley County Sheriff’s Department, and the Regional 911 Network of the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission (PRPC) in order to provide the best 911 services to local citizens.

Rural addressing will provide emergency service personnel such as fire departments, ambulance services, and law enforcement with a more efficient way of locating 911 callers. Emergency personnel will no longer have to depend on “local knowledge” to find a person needing help. For example, when responding to a call outside of town, an address like “6725 County Road E” can be much more useful to a new ambulance driver than “two miles south of the old Smith place.”

The new physical addresses should not be confused with a mailing address. At some date in the future, the US Postal Service will be converting the physical address into mailing addresses to replace the HC and RR addresses. This will help with the automated processing and sorting of mail, the post office says.

A physical address as other benefits beyond 911, according to the PRPC. Utilities and package delivery companies are beginning to require a physical address to start a new account or service an existing one. Similarly, insurance companies often require such information about the property for which they are providing coverage.
