Broncos win Area championship

The Broncos played solid basketball over Farwell last Friday night at Randall High, earning a 69-48 win for the Area Championship.

Clarendon played with determination early on, and it paid off big for them. They led by 14 at the break and continued to ride their momentum until the buzzer.

The Broncos shot well from the free throw line hitting 12 out of 16, and four Broncos finished in double figures. Freshmen Sylvester Ballard put in 17, Lamarcus Peniger and Jamal Butler each helped with 14, and Jmaury Butler finished with 12. Jordan Herndon had six, Collin Butler added four, and Donovan Thompson had two.

Earlier in the week, the Broncos defeated Fritch in the Bi-District round. After playing the first quarter fairly even, the Broncos turned up the heat and gained a 14-point lead going into the final half. Fritch was not finished, though, as they took advantage of bonus shots from the Broncos’ committing too many fouls. Several players were in foul trouble as the final buzzer neared, but they were able to hang onto the lead and get the win.

Peniger led the way with 22, Jamal Butler added 19, and Thompson helped with 14. Ballard finished with eight, C. Butler had seven, and Herndon had four.

The Broncos played Gruver in the Regional Quarter-Final game Tuesday night, but Clarendon was defeated, 46-64.

Ladies win area title at buzzer

Four ticks of the clock were all the Lady Broncos needed to put in a game-winning shot in the Area Round at Canyon High School against a good New Deal team. The Lady Broncos won 41-40 and advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals against Panhandle.

Seven points was the biggest lead in the back and forth battle. The Lady Broncos led by that amount early in the fourth quarter, but New Deal’s three-points shooters struck hard to recapture the lead with only a minute left in the game. Clarendon then committed a foul that put New Deal on the line and failed to convert giving the ladies just a few seconds to score.

After a timeout called by Clarendon’s Coach Korey Conkin, the ladies set up with only four seconds left in the game. New Deal was most likely looking to stop the three, when senior Makayla Brown two-hand passed the ball like a rocket to Jade Benson near the lane. Benson took the ball and put in an off-balance turn around jump shot that was nothing but net to give the ladies the win.

Scoring were Benson 16, Ashlyn Crawford 8, Matte Johnson 6, Brown 6, Kaylin Hicks 3, and Kira Weatherton 2.

Broncos finish season with loss to Ralls

The Clarendon Broncos have had an up and down year on the field ending the year at 6-5.

However, they were able to finish third in the District race, which put them in a playoff game with Ralls last Friday night in Tulia. Despite playing hard, the Broncos fell short 19-32.

“Friday did not turn out the way we wanted it to,” head coach Clint Conkin said. “This season was a learning experience for our players, and I am so proud of our guys. They got valuable playing time that will help them in the future.”

The Broncos’ total yardage was down from their average on the season only racking up 127 rushing yards and 82 passing yards. Lamarcus Penigar was eight of 17 passing for the 82 yards and one touchdown to Collin Butler. The Jackrabbits had a stop for everything the Broncos gave them as they were able to control the scoring in the game.

Jmaury Davis was responsible for two of the Broncos’ touchdowns and carried the ball nine times for 53 yards. Sylvester Ballard carried the balls 11 times for only three yards, and Penigar had seven carries for 34 yards. Jordan Evans carried twice for two yards, and Antwan Bassett had 19 yards on two carries. Rhett Caison carried the ball twice as well and finished with four yards.

Jamal Butler caught three passes from Penigar for 27 yards, and Nate Lee had one catch for three yards. Jmaury Butler grabbed a pass for 12 yards, and Collin Butler finished the game with 40 yards on three catches and one TD.

Seniors Collin Butler, Jamal Butler, Harm Drenth, Henry Dushay, Nate Lee, and Zane Sneathen will be missed by their teammates next year.

The Broncos will begin their 2019-2020 basketball season at home Friday night, November 22, against Hereford with JV to play at 5:30 p.m. and varsity to follow at 7:00.

Broncos slam Booker

After a week off, the Clarendon Broncos came on strong against the Booker Kiowas and sent them packing at 64-0 in Bronco Stadium last Friday night.

The win gave the Broncos a spot in the post-season play, which will begin the second week of November.

The Broncos racked up 283 yards on the ground and posted 354 total yards on the night. Lamarcus Penigar was four of nine passing for 71 yards in the air.

The Broncos’ ground game was spot on with Sylvester Ballard leading the Broncos on the ground with 161 yards on 14 carries. He averaged 11.5 yards per carry and rushed for two touchdowns. Jmaury Davis had three carries for 55 yards and found the end zone once. Jordan Herndon carried three times for 15 yards, and Jordan Evans had one carry for nine yards.

Rhett Caison scooted 42 yards for the night with one touchdown, and Josh Dunn gained two yards on four carries.

Collin Butler grabbed two passes for 56 yards and one touchdown, and Jamal Butler had one catch for 13 yards and one TD.

“I thought our kids played well on both sides of the ball,” head coach Clint Conkin said. “We also had several guys making tackles.”

Jordan Herndon had 10 tackles and a caused fumble, and Henry Dushay had five tackles. Collin Butler had four tackles and a fumble recovery, and Penigar grabbed an interception and had three tackles. Nate Lee made and interception and took it into the end zone for six and posted two tackles, while Davis had three tackles and one interception.

The Broncos will travel to Gruver on Friday.

Broncos slam Moguls at Munday

The Bronco football team found a rhythm in Friday’s game with Munday despite a two-hour weather delay. Clarendon was able to shut out the Moguls, 40-0.

The Broncos quickly turned 341 total yards into six touchdowns to get by their opponent. Quarterback Brock Hatley was responsible for 39 of those yards in the air on two passes. One was caught by Jamal Butler for a big gain at 37 yards, and Jordan Herndon caught a two-yard pass.

“We played good Friday night,” head coach Clint Conkin said. “I thought our kids played very well.”

Once again, the Broncos looked good on the ground as they racked up 302 yards rushing on the offensive side of the ball. Sylvester Ballard had a good night running with 102 yards on 10 carries and three touchdowns. Lamarcus Penigar carried seven times for 37 yards, and Antwan Bassett had 12 carries on the night for 53 yards.

Herndon made good on two scores for the Broncos on three carries for 59 yards. Jordan Evans found the end zone once and was four for ten on the ground and Jmaury Davis posted 10 yards on four carries.

“Defensively, we held them to 135 total yards,” Conkin said. “They had 32 rushing yards and 103 passing yards.”

Davis finished with seven tackles and two QB sacks, and Hatley had seven tackles. Ballard had six tackles and one interception, and Ivan Gonzalez had four tackles and one interception. Herndon played strong and had four tackles, two sacks, and one caused fumble, while Butler had five tackles and sacked the QB once. Evans had three tackles and one sack, Zane Sneathen grabbed five tackles, one sack, and one caused fumble, and Penigar finished with one tackle and one interception.

The Broncos will play Memphis Friday, September 27, in their Homecoming game in Bronco Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.

CHS athletes named to All-District

Five Broncos and two Lady Broncos have been selected to the Baseball and Softball All-District Teams for the 2019 season.

Freshman Brock Hatley was named Newcomer of the Year for his work offensively and defensively. Senior hurlers Noab and Preston Elam made the team for their job on the mound, giving the Broncos a solid defense. Payton Hicks, also a senior, earned his award for his play in the infield, and junior Collin Butler excelled in the outfield throughout the season.

Senior Lady Broncos Emily Johnson and Sandrea Smith have been standouts for the ladies each year in high school and was named to the All-District First team for their work on first base and in the outfield.

Senior Isaac Dunham was named to the Second All-District Team at first base, and Ryan Ward, Harm Drenth, and Aiden Caudle received Honorable Mentions.

The MVP of the district went to Creighton Killian from Wellington and Pitcher of the Year went to Kayden Valles also from Wellington. Jeff Anderson, Wellington, was named Coach of the Year by the district.

Broncos beat Memphis, 22-1

The Broncos have wrapped up their regular season and will face off against Sunray in their opening round of the playoffs this week.

The first game of the best of three series will be held Thursday, May 2, in Clarendon at 4:30 p.m. The second and third (if needed) games will be played in Sunray on Friday, May 3, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The Broncos defeated Memphis 22-1 last week in one of their last games of the regular season to give them a boost going into the playoff rounds. According to coach Brad Elam, the Broncos did everything right.

“Great day for baseball and kids played a great game,” he said. “All phases did outstanding.”

Elam noted that the Broncos pounded out 11 hits in the game that include Collin Butler’s first homerun.

“Every starter scored at least one run,” he added.

Preston Elam, Ryan Ward, and Payton Hicks split duties on the mound and only allowed the Cyclones two hits and one run in five innings. Defensively, the Broncos were sharp as they committed zero errors in their win. They also were able to turn a nice double play from Butler to Jodee Pigg and then to Noab Elam for the outs.

Broncos rout Claude, 12-1

In the Broncos’ big win over Claude last week, Preston Elam hit an in-the-park grand slam to get them back on the winning side after a heartbreaking loss to Wellington.

The Broncos won big at 12-1 with Payton Hicks adding a two-run homerun at the end of the game.

“(We) only had a 4-1 lead going into the fifth before our bats exploded,” he said. “Noab Elam and Collin Butler also hit the ball well and Aiden Caudle added his first homerun of the year.”

Defensively, the Broncos played well only making one error. Ryan Ward and Noab Elam were able to hold the Mustangs to only four hits.

The Broncos dropped a close game to Wellington at the end of the week, taking a 3-4 loss.

“Very proud of the boys in this game,” Elam said. “(The) first game, we didn’t really show up and got beat -14. We had good practices and focus coming into the game and played much better.”

The Broncos had the game won, but the Rockets’ last at bat spelled doom for the Broncos.

“We had them beat, but just couldn’t hold them off,” Elam said. “Had some timely hits and made some good plays. Preston Elam pitched one of his best games of the year. Still, we made a few too many mistakes, but we were able to put ourselves in a position to win.”

The Broncos will be preparing for post-season play next week.

Broncos demolish Shamrock

The Broncos rebounded after their loss with Wellington to demolish the Irish 11-1 last week.

According to head coach Brad Elam, the Broncos had an outstanding game on the mound.

“We followed our worst game with a best game in many phases,” Elam said. “Pitching was outstanding. (We) might have set a Clarendon record only having to throw 50 pitches in six innings.”

Pitcher Preston Elam threw 42 pitches in five innings and Ryan Ward threw eight pitches in an inning.

“Very well pitched game with a lot of strikes,” Elam said. “In order to pitch so few pitches, defense had to play well and they did.”

Elam feels his team possibly played their best defensive game of the year, noting that Payton Hicks making a highlight worthy play in the infield. Despite the win, Elam says he is still not satisfied with the team hitting.

“Some of the players had good games,” he said.

Hicks reached base three times and scored three runs and Noab Elam had two hits while driving in three. P. Elam had two hits, scored three runs, and drove in one, and Ward had two big hits and drove in three runners.

Last Monday the Broncos defeated Memphis 11-1 and only recorded one defensive error in the game.

“We had a good game against Memphis,” Elam said. “Defensive wise, only made one error and that was after the game had already been decided. We had several players hit well.”

N. Elam had a big day at the plate and on the mound where he gave up only one hit and struck out 10 throwing 62 total pitches in five innings of work.

Brock Hatley had a big two out two rbi hit in the first inning. P. Elam and Hicks each had rbi singles and scored one run each, while Elam stole three bases.

The Broncos will host Claude on April 18 at 4:00 p.m. and travel to Memphis on April 24.

Jaramillo places at regional lift meet

Power lifter Aubrey Jaramillo made her second appearance in a row at the Regional Powerlifting Meet last weekend.

Jaramillo came home with the fifth-place medal for a personal best lift total of 460 pounds.

She had personal bests in the squat at 175 pounds and the deadlift at 195 pounds. Jaramillo bench pressed 90 pounds.

“I was proud of the way she competed,” coach Johnny Nino said. “She came in seeded 8th and improved three spots to fifth. She has overcome a knee injury from about three weeks ago. It locked up on her on the third lift of the squat, but after putting some ice on it she came back to finish the meet. I was very proud of her.”

Jaramillo has been a staple on the powerlifting team for the past two years and will be looking forward to lift again next season.

“I want to thank Aubrey for all the hard work she put in this year, as well as the other powerlifters that competed this year,” Nino said. “I want to thank Joe Jaramillo for all of his help during the meets this year.”
