A 2007 Peterbilt truck goes up in a huge fireball on US 287 in Clarendon Saturday, August 17, threatening the building housing Faith Saddlery. The truck driver, 41-year-old Fasil Mengistu Alemu of Eagan, Minn., escaped from the fire unharmed. The truck was completely destroyed, but the trailer and cargo were undamaged. The building sustained broken windows and fire damage to the awning. This was the third time a truck has burned to the ground in Donley County this summer. Responding to the incident were members of the Clarendon, Hedley, and Howardwick fire departments; Donley County Sheriffs’ Office; Donley County EMS; Texas Department of Public Safety; and the Texas Department of Transportation. The Clarendon High School Cheerleaders attended camp at Tarleton State University June 17-20. The girls learned new material for the school year to help cheer the Broncos on. Bronco mascot Sarah Luttrell received an All-American nomination. Senior Emberli Holland, junior Abby Johnson, and sophomore Sterling King also received All-American nominations. The team received a bid to Nationals and got a Superior rating on the cheer they performed. The Bronco Cheer Squad is looking forward to leading the crowds this year. County officials say the company is performing a five-step process of prepping, priming, and painting windows on the Jewel of the Plains.
