Lady Broncos win Miami Tournament
The Lady Broncos got on the defense bus and rode it all the way to the championship in the Miami Tournament last weekend. The ladies breezed through Booker, West Texas, and Miami to get the trophy.
The Lady Broncos eased by Booker in the first round, 60-30. Ashlyn Crawford picked the ball from Booker several times and turned them into baskets to finish with 17 points. Crawford also was perfect from the free throw line making all seven shots. Jade Benson joined Crawford in double figures with 13 points.
It was never a contest for the Lady Broncos as they played fundamental basketball while gaining a solid lead early on and never looking back.
Kira Weatherton put in nine, Mattee Johnson worked the arc and pumped in two three-pointers in the third quarter finishing with eight, and Graci Kidd hit a big three and finished with five.
Mckayla Brown put in four, and Madi Smith and Kaitlyn Davis added two each.
The second round the ladies went up against West Texas and soundly defeated them, 60-30. Clarendon began the game big and finished it out the same. WT never had a chance to get anything going in the game.
Crawford and Benson had a good game with 12 and 11 respectively. Weatherton and Smith each put in eight and Johnson added seven. Brown and Jayde Gribble added four apiece, Kaylin Hicks and Finley Cunningham put in two each, and Kailee Osburn and Madi Gay helped with one point each.
They took on Miami in the Championship game and breezed to a 63-31 win for first led by Benson who pumped in 22 points and went eight for nine from the bonus line.
Defense was the name of the game for the entire tournament and the Lady Broncos took advantage of turn overs. Offensively, the ladies missed only two free throws for 87 percent and hit six three-pointers. Miami struggled to get anything going against the aggressive Lady Broncos.
Benson 22, Johnson 10, Weatherton 9, Smith and Cunningham six, Crawford four, Osburn three, Brown two, and Smith and Gribble one each.

Late Night Shopping set for Dec. 12
Chamber of Commerce officials encourage to shop “Totally Locally” this month for a chance to win big prizes during Late Night Shopping on December 12 and 19.
Last week saw four lucky winners get to spin the wheel for prizes. Those winners were Kaysea Christopher, Stephanie Barnes, Chrisi Tucek, and Savannah Askew, who each won a prize gift from one of the participating merchants on the wheel.
The Chamber’s Totally Locally Gift Ideas blog is now up on ClarendonTX.com and features gift ideas from about a dozen participating businesses. Each gift idea costs $50 or less and are available for sale and also are on the Prize Wheel to be given away at 8 p.m. at Saye’s on the next two Thursday nights, December 12, and 19, during Late Night Shopping.
“Totally Locally” merchants participating at press time are A Fine Feathered Nest, Clarendon Outpost, Cornell’s Country Store, Country Bloomers Flowers & Gifts, Every Nook & Cranny, Floyd’s Automotive, Henson’s, J&W Lumber, Mike’s Pharmacy, Saye’s Tack Store, Studio E, and Turquoise & Rust. Shoppers can register at any “Totally Locally” merchant during the season for a chance to spin the wheel for prizes and for a chance to win $500 in Clarendon Cash.
Shoppers must be present to spin the wheel, but you don’t not have to be present to win the $500 drawing on December 19.
According to small business advocates, every $100 spent in locally-owned stores returns $68 to the local community through taxes, payrolls, and other expenditures. That same money spent in another town or online returns nothing to your local community.
Shop at home this holiday season and remember the important role your local merchants play in keeping your community strong.

Seliger holds town hall meeting
State Sen. Kel Seliger (R-Amarillo) gave an overview of the last legislative session and talked about upcoming issues during a town hall at the Bairfield Activity Center last Friday.
The senator opened his comments by talking about the loss of his committee assignments following a public disagreement with the Republican leadership.
“I voted against two of 30 things the lieutenant governor wanted and was removed from the committees,” Seliger said.
If that bothered the senator, he didn’t show it. Instead he touted his commitment to local control and local government Friday in the face of actions by his own party against those interests.
“It was a terrible session for local control and local governments,” Seliger said, “and it will get worse before it gets better.”
He mentioned specifically his opposition to property tax reforms that limited how much new revenue local governments could raise.
“What would we do if Washington told us we had to lower our severance tax or our sales tax,” he asked. “We would go nuts!”
Seliger was pleased with the improvements that were made to teacher salaries and retired teacher benefits, but he said neither of those went far enough to address those issues.
Looking ahead, Seliger said legalizing marijuana won’t happen any time soon, and he said Texas won’t turn Democratic soon either but said that depends on how Republicans relate to Latino voters.
