The Clarendon Broncos stopped Lipan in the State Semi-Final game in Graham last Tuesday before they went on to the State Championship in San Antonio on Saturday. Lipan gave a good fight, but in the end, the Broncos won 67-48.
Lipan started the game with two-shot due to a technical foul and the ball before the Broncos could get their hands on it. The Indians built up a huge lead early on that temporarily put the Broncos in a hole with Lipan leading the first quarter 17-8. But in Bronco fashion, they were able to bounce back and grab the momentum in the next eight minutes of play.
Cayden D’Costa hit two huge three-pointers, and Jmaury Davis, Donovan Thompson, and Lamarcus Peniger hit deuces to increase the Broncos’ point total going into half time.
While offensively the Broncos were doing it right, their defense stepped up big after the break. The Broncos put in 19 points to only seven for Lipan as they continued to transform their game from the first quarter of play. The Broncos hit 9 of 14 free throws in the final quarter to aid them in their win. As they have done all season, strong defense allowed the Broncos to put a lid on their opponents’ big scorers. Three Broncos combined to finish in double figures in the win for a trip to the big stage.
Thompson had 20, Penigar put in 19, and Davis added 18. Cayden D’Costa finished with nine and Jordan Herndon put in two.
