Services for Nell Drake Cornell, age 74, were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2004, in the First United Methodist Church in Clarendon with Rev. James Ivey Edwards, Pastor, officiating. Burial was held at Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc., of Clarendon.
Mrs. Cornell was born October 14, 1929, in Plainview, and was a Clarendon resident most of her life except from 1972 until 1992 when she lived in Midland. She married Lonnie Cornell on March 27, 1948. She graduated from Clarendon High School in 1947, where she was a cheerleader and a member of the Lady Broncho basketball team.
She worked in the school tax office from 1962 until 1972, when she moved to Midland where she was employed in the County tax office from 1972 until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarendon.
Mrs. Cornell was preceded in death by her parents, George Dewey Drake and Arah Omega Phillips Drake; a sister, Martha Drake; and a granddaughter, Nicole Alexis Waldrop.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Waldrop and husband Tommy of Shamrock and Dianne Brunson and husband David of Muleshoe; one brother, Kenneth Drake and wife Mary of Louisville, Texas; four sisters: Bonnie Crawford and husband F.G. of Amarillo; Ruth Jackson of Amarillo; Janice Washington and husband J.C. of Williamsburg, New Mexico; and Sandra Patrick and husband David of Seagoville, Texas; six grandchildren: Colby and Crystal Waldrop of Ackerly, Texas; Jade and Zak Cottrell of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Derek and Dustin Brunson of Lubbock; one great grandson, Grayson Ray Waldrop of Ackerly; and many nieces and nephews.
The family requests that memorials be to the Clarendon Senior Citizens Association or The First United Methodist Church in Clarendon.
