Clarendon High School junior cross-country sensation Madi Benson is on her way to the state cross-country meet for the first time in her running career.
Benson finished the two-mile race in Lubbock Monday at Mae Simmons Park in a time of 13:13.5 for 17th place. She was able to better her time this year over last year’s 14:33.80. The Lady Bronco team finished fifth overall.
“We are super proud of Madi for advancing to the state meet,” coach Korey Conkin said. “We are proud of all the girls for working so hard, going above and beyond in order to be so competitive in this tough sport. We wished her team was traveling with her, but we barely missed that opportunity.”
Addy Havens and Elliot Frausto have been tearing up the courses in the pre-district season and finished the meet in 27th and 31st place with a time of 13:32.2 and 13:33.1 respectively. Gracie Ellis was 56th at 14:01.4 and Tandie Cummins who was a 2023 state competitor finished 58th with a time of 14:05.7. “Bryce has been a joy to coach the past four years and worked so extremely hard to have so much success throughout the years,” Conkin said. “He will, without a doubt, be a tougher human after enduring four years of CC workouts and competitions.”
Conkin also had praise for newcomer Ybarra.
“Tristen missed advancing to state by one place, and he is only a freshman,” she said. “He has many more years to get to that level. I am super proud of his work ethic this season.”
The Broncos succumbed to the Shamrock Irish last Friday night at home and were defeated 12-40.
The Broncos were able to rack up some good numbers and made great plays on both sides of the ball.
Kyler Bell was at the helm and had some success on offense. Bell threw a strike to Caleb Herbert in the second quarter for their first score of the game.
Bell and Grant Haynes did a good job running the ball and were able to gain some valuable yardage. They earned their second score of the game when Bell ran it in from short yardage. The score at half time was close at 12-20, but Shamrock was able to score twenty more points in the second to get the win.

The young Bronco team ended a tough pre-District season at home last Friday night against the Lockney Longhorns and despite playing strong, were narrowly defeated 20-29.
Lockney was able to get on the board first with a long touchdown pass early in the game, but the Broncos fought back to take the lead at the end of the quarter when senior Mason Sims hit Colton Caudle down the middle for six. Grant Haynes ran in the two-point conversion.
Lockney opened the second twelve minutes with the ball, but the Bronco defense stayed strong in the red zone and kept them out of the endzone. A field goal attempt by the Longhorns was partially blocked by the Broncos to get back on offense. They struggled to get anything done and offensively and Lockney was able to find the endzone before half time to go to the locker room with only a 14-8 lead in the game.
Two more Longhorn touchdowns put the Broncos behind 15 points, but they were able to cover that spread in the final ten minutes of the game when Sims found the endzone twice to get within nine points.
The Broncos were plagued with penalties and turnovers in the game, which stifled their momentum in several offensive series. Injuries to at least two players late in the game worked against them.
The Broncos will have an open night on October fourth and begin District play at Wellington on October 11 at 7:00 p.m.
Clarendon’s Tristen Ybarra ran a great 5K race at Klein Park in Amarillo last weekend and placed ninth out of 52 runners from 1A-4A.
Ybarra’s time of 17:37.57 was less than a minute and a half off the winning time.
Madi Benson ran 10th out of 80 runners in the girls’ division with a time of 13:32.82 for the two-mile course. Benson was able to lead the Lady Bronco team to an impressive third place in a field of 1A-4A schools. Elliot Frausto stayed close to Benson and finished 13th at 13:48.02, and Addy Havens ran right behind Frausto in 15th place with a time of 13:52.38.
Gracie Ellis was 24th at 14:39.07, and Lexi Phillips ran 39th with a time of 15:28.99.
The Broncos and Lady Broncos will be open September 28 and will run October 1 in the Greenbelt Gallop at Kinkaid Park.
The Clarendon Broncos have faced a tough pre-district season on the football field. Their 18-51 loss at home last week was another hard-fought game with a discouraging outcome for the young team.
The Broncos got started on the wrong foot when they were pushed back behind their own goal line a minute into the game and suffered a safety at the hands of the Greyhounds. Gruver went on to score 30 points in the opening quarter of play and reached 50 points at the break.
Despite the loss, the Broncos had some bright spots on both sides of the ball. Mason Sims did a good job at the quarterback spot but struggled with fumbles and interceptions. Sims earned the Broncos’ first score of the game on a 55-yard run around the left side to the endzone. Penalties plagued the Broncos just when they abegan to find momentum in the game. Sims did, however, find Colton Caudle for a 37-yard pass early on, but narrowly fell short of six.
Junior Kyler Bell stepped in at the QB position late in the game and connected with Mason from 17 yards out for a touchdown and then found him again for another six points.
The Broncos are determined to turn things around and will focus on Lockney for their Homecoming game Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Bronco Stadium.
