The Broncos used a big-scoring second inning to shake down the Shamrock Irish last Friday in a district matchup winning 8-5. Adam Topper was on the mound and pitched another good game.
The Broncos had a good scoring second inning, despite struggling somewhat at the plate.
“We scored four runs in the second inning and thought we would get started hitting the ball, but we are still struggling,” coach Brad Elam said. “We did have two doubles by Dusty Rice, Dillon Nickell, and a triple by Chance McAnear.”
Elam went on to say that eight of nine batters scored a run, but the Broncos only scored in the second and seventh innings. He also added that the Broncos looked great at times and bad at other times on the defensive side of the ball. Those bad times in the outfield allowed Shamrock’s runners to get on base, but the Broncos were then able to turn double plays to get out of trouble. According to Elam, the first save came with bases loaded when Topper fielded a ball, threw it home to Rice; and Rice got it to Cole Ward on first for the double out. The second double play came when Rowdy Speed caught a line drive and threw it to Diego Santos to double up the runner. Santos was credited again when he fielded a ground ball, tagged the runner and threw it to first. The last of the doubles happened when a ground ball was hit to Nickell who threw to Santos at second base and on to Ward at first.
“Four double plays (in one game) is unheard of in high school,” Elam said.
The junior varsity played a hard game, but fell to River Road 1-5.
“I thought our pitchers did a really good job,” Elam said. “Izzy Osburn pitched three innings, Bryce Hatley pitched three, and Zack Laroe pitched an inning. We made plays on defense but had trouble hitting the ball.”
The Broncos will travel to Booker on Friday, April 5, playing at 4:00 p.m. and play West Texas High at home on Monday, April 8, also at 4:00 p.m.
